F

My post was made with tongue firmly in cheek - most of it anyway I was hoping my comments would result in a reply but I'm sure I wasn't the only reason you chose to de-lurk.

I do know a little bit about the F1 such as gold used for heat shields, titanium (iirc) used in the Kenwood hi-fi, wide use of magnesium, etc. Having apparently strong views does not mean one is ignorant "(they're anodised black, but please don't mention that to Dan).".

I stand by my comment about the styling and totally agree that the beholder can be wrong....

My comment about reverse gear was that it's difficult to engage.

But a great insight into ownership - thanks for taking the time to reply in such a detailed manner.

regards

dan

Firstly, what a great read that was
Erm, legitimasy, gosh i feel all embaressed now
Right here we are.

Qoute/
The other question was more of a statement really with 5 years of membership ( or there abouts ) i would have thought more than enough time to prove your, whats the word?(I AM SOOO THICK SOMETIMES) legitimasy?; i don't know. Anyway why now?
Hope to read some of your posts soon mate

Granted, poor substituted word for my well animated Lack of command (sometimes) for the english language.
What i was trying to say after verbalising myself in brackets, was that with 5 years of membership to this site i was surprised that you had not posted and even if questions had arose about whether or not you were indeed the owner of an F1; you would have had ample time should you be inclined to prove that you were.
Unlike that other chap ( before my time ) However i believe you answered that question in the first paragraph also.
I can assure you there was no ill feeling or mallice intended in my post.
I like the name Bilko ( it's catchy and easy to say . i got it during my time in the forces and because i am short with glasses, Well it was inevitable really.
cheers.

Ooh thought of another ( more sensible question ).
After reading of your willingness and very sensible attitude and desire to get yourself up to driving standard as it were.

Incidentally, i think this is a most admirable and applaudable approach to ownership of such a car.

Is there actually any manditory driving standard required of the owner ( other than owning a license ) by Mcclaren before taking deliveryof the F1? Or do they throw in several strongly advised lessons for driving one of the worlds best ( if not the ) supercars?

Gavin Pearson (Pro-Europe/Labour voter?) -
Independent nations that make their own rules and have their own currency can do pretty well; Singapore and Switzerland are a bit better off than Spain and Belgium. Speaking of politics, I wouldn't mind seeing Saddam Hussein getting three new roommates - Jacques Chirac, Al Gore and Ken Livingstone.

Agree with all your above comments, BTW I think I would class myself as a Thatcherite Anti-Europe pinko hater.

Wow! Wow, what a fantastic post by a fantastic fellow PHer. I dropped my jaw at one point reading the original post (can't recall where even after a reread). What an epic PH post. Thank you! In all regards it was more insightful than Mr. Brundle's recent video.

Does McLaren offer performance upgrades? To cure the brakes, etc?

Did your F1 allow you to meet any one famous at Mclaren (Ron Dennis, an F1 driver, or Gordon Murray)?

Does the car ever bark fire out the tail pipes or give a good crackle pop?

On a side note, not to sound like a smart ass or a doubter but I didn't think the F1 had a flywheel?

Fantastic informative first post.

Many thanks. It's refreshing to find out that someone who owns the "all-time-ultracar" is down to earth enough to post an enthusiatic & researched posting to answer the questions of awe-struck strangers.

Top man. I thank you.

Wow! I have always fancied this car, ever since it was launched, if money was no object I would buy one over any other supercar. What really does it for me is the central driving position - I think it helps give it it's unique status over other cars. The fact that it's now quite old and yet can still out perform lot's of other cars is amazing. I have the Autocar pull out, as well as the encylopedia of supercars which it features in, with a huge fold out centre page.

I read somewhere that mclaren is working on a new supercar - do you know anything about this? Being an F1 owner I thought that Mclaren might keep you informed of such things - the SLR is an amazing car but it just does not do it for me - however a new proper sports car aimed at the 360 and baby lambo would be amazing...

Oh and thank you very much for taking the time create such a wonderful and informative post.

Here's a question. When you were buying the car, did you get to look at a few and decide which one was for you? Given that there are so few is it a case of buying the first one that you get to see?

Hello, guess that answers my question as to whether they are *that* good. Thanks.

Just to add to PetrolTeds question, you mentioned that there are always a few forsale - where does one go to buy a (normal road going) Mclaren F1?? Have seen the odd racer for sale but never a road car?

Wow, excellent read, you are very, very lucky!!

Just wondering what you think of the new Mclaren Mercedes SLR, do you think Mclaren are tarnishing their image with that one as it is surely nothing compared to the F1?

Top man Flemke.

Great to hear about such a fabulous car, especially since I will never own one (this is almost a certainty since even if I had the money - which isn't impossible - my classic car addiction is just too strong).

I have spent many hours in Park Lane with my face literally pressed against the showroom window (well who wouldn't ?), it's just good to hear that you use it properly and long may you continue !

I have only one question, those passengers that fell asleep.... did they have a pulse?

Seeing your comments about dan? calling the F1 a 'kit-car' has suddenly made me feel a whole lot better about the Ultima. Like the F1 (dare I make such a comparison) there are only 2 donor components - the engine and the gearbox.

Now, fancy exchanging rides for bit

Good to hear an 'informed' opinion for a change.

The accuracy and honesty in your replies to the questions is remarkable. Well done.

Isn't this what PH is all about - people learning and enjoying other peoples views and experiences of different cars?

Marvellous.

Mr Flemke,

I have a couple of questions for you.

'How does the F1 compare to the first car you owned ?'

'How long before you got it had you wanted one ?'

actually - here's one.... what other toys are in the garage of an F1 owner ?

and what constitutes a fantasy garage...?
