Wollaton is a nice and relatively quiet.

I prefer the villages just out of the East side of Nottingham eg Woodborough, Lambley, Lowdham, East Bridgford. Lovely, but significantly pricer than Nottingham suburbs.

Vale of Belvoir is even lovelier, but quite a way from Nottingham 'proper'.

I suspect I live quite close to MrMaggit (Porchester area?), which is pretty cheap at the moment.

For 160k-odd I'll sell you my 2 bed bungalow built over a 20'x20' garage...

To be honest, we had some problems with 'anti-social' crime, but it's been quieter for a while now (I hope I haven't spoken too soon). Think that was down to one or two youths that have been moved on - could happen anywhere really.

West bridgford is over-rated IMHO. It's a large suburban area with most of the problems of any other, but more expensive.

There has been a huge explosion of city-centre living (mostly in converted old Lace Market mills), but that doesn't sound like it's for you(?).

As regards the workshop... Wanna go halves on renting a barn/workshop?

Cheers, Phil

A lot of people live in Derby where property is a fair bit cheaper then make the dash down the A52 (30mins) to Nottingham to work.

Allestree/Chellaston are decent enough areas.

Indeed.... and I just happen to know of a large detached house with a huge double garage for sale for £250k.....

The thing I like about the northern towns as apposed to the Nottingham inner boundery towns is the gap between them, all the nice areas of Notts back on to a nasty area which leads to the scrotes going 'shopping' next door

The thing I like about Nottm is that it's not one of the Northern Banjo Country mining towns I was brought up in

At least there is a big hill between St. Annes and where I am - seems it is to much effort for the undesirables to walk over it for their 'shopping'.

As regards Derby... Oh no sir, I don't think so.

The Nottm/Derby seems very much like the England/Wales (respectively) relationship. Including the comments about sheep...

Cheers, Phil

We live in Carlton near the Richard Herrod Leisure Centre. Are you serious with your 2 bed bungalow & double garage?

Serious it exists, serious about selling, or serious about the price?

The wife is more serious than me to be honest, 'cos I face the prospect of having to go down to a single garage in exchange for extra bedrooms

(the price is from a valuation 5 months ago... I nearly fell off my chair when estate agent told me)

Why, wanna buy it? Only about 1/3 mile WNW of you.

Cheers, Phil

I live right at the edge of Notts.
Mapperley plains. From there it is a 3 minute walk into the coutryside.
In fact, my house is up for sale (but £200k though, although I'd sell for £190k).
It is very quiet where I am.
As far as I know, no one has suffered any crime on my very small estate.
Have a garage but no workshop though. Pity.
But I need to move to be nearer work.

We've got a two-bed semi, but a single garage, full of motorbikes. Have to leave the TVR with Lorraines' parents, be nice to have him with us.

I've lived in the centre of Nottingham for 16 years and have not, as yet have only been the victim of crime when living in St.Annes. Places to avoid are St.Annes, the Meadows and Radford/Hyson Green. West Bridgford and Wollaton are reasonably crime free, but pricey. Should get somewhere here for £200,000 upwards and maybe more for luxury of garage. Mapperley Park is great, but pricey. Need off road parking here as I always got my car windows smashed when parked on the street and my car was only worth £750!

Long Eaton and Beeston are cheaper but lack character or excitement. Villages between Derby and Nottingham, off A52 are pretty and green fields abound. Not too badly priced either. You may not like living in a village though unless you fancy drive into Derby or Notts and are willing to put up with that inconvenience. North Nottingham has some reasonably priced properties around Selston and Ripley. Newark is another option. You can get a brand new 4 bed detached here for under £175,000. My friend got just that for £145,00 18 montha ago. Newark is 'nice' and friendly, though quiet for a town. I thought it was a bit depressing when I went there on a sunday.

I live just outside the city in Sneinton. Hve lived here crime free for 8 years. Having a nice car though is a problem. Have had my old Volvo 440 keyed several times and arial broken My ex had his Corrado keyed, broken into and also his lamps knicked. I have noticed that car crime has diminished over past two years. Also as the area becomes more affluent (house price has increased 150% in last 4 years) I have noticed nicer cars on street - BMWs, Mercs, Golf GTIs, Renault Cleos.

Nottingham is a lively, up and coming city. I would say that Derby is a bit depressing and is not so exciting when it comes to night life or culture. It is definately worth checking out the web sites recommended by others. Feel free to e-mail me if you want any more advice on living in Nottingham or surrounding district. I have lived in a lot of places over the years.

Happy house hunting

MrMaggit - are the inlaws far away?

'Cos I looked into renting a council garage a while ago. All the ones near me had a waiting list, but I think there were some available under the flats at Carlton Square. Look quite decent as they are behind a big gate thing.

Just a thought

One day I will get organised and rent a barn/workshop from a farmer - anybody want to go in on that

Cheers, Phil

Burton Joyce. I don't mind using their garage at the moment, because it also gives me room for Dads miniature traction engines. But in time...........

I'd prefer to have Wol closer to home.

I was thinking that you might like to take a look at Epperstone or Lambley, both quite close to Burton Joyce. I saw a nice house in Epperstone a few months ago for £145,000. It was 3 beds and the village is reasonably sleepy. There are loads of farms around that neck of the woods, so I imagine you could find workshop space relatively easily. Cotgrave might also be worth checking out.

Derby isn't depressing at all - it's a small city so doesn't have some of the "features" of Notts - guns, smack heads, etc, etc are not really a problem here (in Derby if you hadn't guessed! ).

I live in Chellaston (well, Shelton Lock) - small world innit.

And Derby has some proper history - if you ever get chance go on one of Richard Felix's ghost walks. As well as being interesting he slags Notts off at every oppportunity.... which is nice.

Does anyone live in Notts? I need to find somewhere to live ASAP and some property in Nottingham seems fairly priced (in todays market anyway). Ideally want to live on the outskirts or villages surrounding it, if I can see a field/grassy area I'm happy . Several mates have advised against it due crime figures but surely they've come down in recent years since the cleanup?

TBH all I need is a fair sized 2 bedroom pad in a decent area where the car/s aren't going to get stolen or broken into and preferably a suitable industrial estate or similar (farm with a spare barn?) within 10 - 15 miles for workshop space. Budget ideally 100K - 150K for a house or 200K if its got 20ft X 20ft workshop space with car access.

All opinions gratefully received

Matt

Well you might squeeze a flat in Ravenshead, but Blidworth might be a better bet value for money wise and having a garage.

If you lived there you might want to try Sherwood Business Park in Annesley for the workshop as it is near the M1 junction and most importantly it is an enterprise zone, so there are incentives like having no business rates to pay. Not sure if it is full or not, yet though.

I was wondering when I would get some good old stick for what I said. I apologise sincerely. I have never lived in Derby so I am hardly in a position to comment. I always enjoy visiting the town and love Derbyshire people. I worked in Ilkeston for 8 years and met more honest and friendly people there than ever I did in Nottingahm in 16 years.
