We also knew them as "spaz chariots" too - not PC I know, but that's how things are sometimes.I remember at thugball matches when there used to be pitch invasions all the invalid carriages around the pitch used to get turned over by the rioting "fans". I know it was wrong, but it was funny
That was back in the day when benefits were means tested. If you reall needed one then you applied and got one. I'm told they deliberately made difficult to drive to lessen their appeal.
I regulalry see Motability cars on owner's drives alongside at least one more brand new motor. And it seems you can get a Motability car for stubbing your toe nowadays. I quite often meet young kids in Motability Fiesta ST's, who have the car because they claim they take their gran out once a month. Boils my p*ss, I tell ya.
Oh yeah, and Liverpool has the highest percentage of Motability dirivers in the country. Around 30% of RAC breakdowns in that town are for Motability(that number may lessen now everyone's stopped getting Renaults!)

Quite a few of these ended up in a local scrap yard around the mid 80s. One enterprising local with a spare field ran a one make race and cashed in. You could buy the car for £10 and I think £2 to enter the race. Supply did not keep up with demand so the rules were relaxed and you could enter anything. I remember a Mk1 Escort rally car turning up on a trailer - some people took it really seriously.

A mate of mine lives on a council estate in Liverpool. He and his wife are the only people on their street who work - you should see the place, all the houses are immaculate and every single one has a brand new car. On Motability.marctwo said:
Sorry to open a long dead topic.Do You own the 'Spaz Chariot'(not PC I know, but that's what they were always called round here!!) in the pictures? As I manage a band from New York called The Erotics & ever since they saw a pic of one of these, with a Nun sitting in it, they have become obsessed by them, to the extent that they included a line about them for a song on their next EP.
I would love to do a photo shoot with the band and the SC. Could You get in touch & see if We could make this happen.
Thank You.
Sorry mate, you were beaten to it, In 1981 Vangelis wrote "Chariots of Fire", part of an entire album devoted to the Invacar, "Erics Theme" being the story of a 23 stone bearded chap who drove one badly through town centres and the Title track was about the propensity for them to spontaeneously combust due to fuel leaks and being made of old Tissue boxes, Vangelis was ordered to remove the "Spaz" bit as it was considered offensive even in 1981, he then went on to work on the unrelased "Mongopera".

Not sure that wasn't due to cock-up/civil service ineptitude rather than conspiracy. The 'no passengers' rule was more effective in that respect.Gassing Station | General Gassing [Archive] | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
