Found torque steer to be pretty minimal in a 1.2 75SX I had and non exisitent at 70 mph.

As for the steering feel. I don't think it's any better than the VAG PAS rack in my Ibiza, in fact I'd say the Ibiza has better steering. The Punto steering is direct with not too much slack about the dead ahead, accurate at small inputs but when you weight it up and find yourself at the limit of grip or traction there isn't a whole lot happening in the steering communication department ie great for town driving.

Which Punto was this btw? That sounds like the MK2 version I (partially) learnt to drive on (is yours PAS?), which seemed to have steering that was more accurate but too heavily power assisted.

That car's been heavily worked over with each model and evolution. The one I drive is a 65S. It's got no PAS or any fancy trim, and it's one of the very first UK RHD batch so maybe there's a lot that wasn't sorted on it. I read somewhere that there were two versions of the 1.2 as well - if you got the higher spec model with a bit more power IIRC.

TBH, the one I drive is a shagged example and I can't wait to buy my own car that doesn't need thrashing to within an inch of its life to keep up with the rest of the world.

I reckon a car which needs a good thrashing is good training for tracks/racing/etc. I reckon my series of shitheaps has probably made me an excellent car pilot (note lack of the word 'driver'). My Morris Minor used to 4 wheel drift, do left foot braking oversteer, have 400 gear changes per minute and all to drive along the local lanes not causing a tailback.

It's a 96/N, model and spec as above, sold to mother and still going well with 110k+ miles, no major surgery needed.

Yep, all the thrashing 'techniques' I apply to the Punto were just subconscious attempts to speed it up that I've developed into a weird method of driving the thing, where I just say 'to hell with longevity', take it by the scruff of the neck and use it like the disposable trash it is.

As a result, I've found that pumping the clutch with the throttle ridden, in a quick motion, gives it a little jerk forwards that increases the momentum. I've found unnecessarily changing from 5th to 4th and back again in a straight line keeps the acceleration going just a little more. I've found that it's better to be a bit more heavy-handed on the steering and to an extent ignore the body roll in the corners.

And because I hate it, and it's driving manners are unfavourable, it's strangely rewarding when I get it to perform 'normally'.

Still, the novelty really is wearing off now and I really do fancy something that doesn't need thrashing and can take corners without feeling like it's going to fall over.

Some absolute drivel being spouted here methinks. Me Julie has a '98 Punto 60s (1242cc) and we've had over 100 out of that a few times, even loaded with camping kit for France trips.
Granted it doesn't take off like the Esprit, but I bet I could still get across town faster in the Punto...

Like I said, it's one of the first ('95), and it's a really baggy example, absolutely knackered but so basic it's actually hard to get it to fail its MOT (and believe me, with all the abuse that car's had, that's quite an acheivement!)

Yes, you get a "jerk forwards". While the car is slowing down, the engine is probably increasing its revs because of the reduced load. The combination of the two will give you a kick when you raise the clutch, br the clutch, and make you go slower than someone driving normally.

I think the above probably covers this.

Actually, smooth steering is best, but you are right. It's possible to get an alarming amount of body-roll from a standard hatch without it losing grip.

Quite so. Also, i'll repeat; torque steer at 70mph in a 1.2 Punto? You what?

Anyway, i'm going to leave it here for as a wise man once said; arguing on the internet is like running in the special olympics - even if you win you're still retarded.

Cheers all, hope i've made some laugh - i know i have

Rob.

v8thunder, your thrashing the crapheap experience sounds very similar to my own. Can't say I've ever "cadence clutched" though, doesn't sound like it does the clutch any good.

You are a very strange boy, aren't you?

A comment like that is not too 'wise', me thinks.

I wonder: Is there scope for some kind of PistonHeads hand-bag fighting competition. We could call it 'PistonBags' and all these little spats could be sorted out with handbags at 20 paces.

I think this thread is admirable. When I was a student I had a mate who swore his car wheelied from the lights. (Austin Allegro). I therefore judge the standard of bullshit has improved quite markedly over a generation, which is a good thing. More importantly in this age of environmental PC sandalistthinkofthechildrenist cars and football are bad while crossstitch and pubic transport are good, its great to see that despite the media bollox young bullshit is flourishing. The entire thread is a complete crock of crap but marvelously entertaining, keep it up lads.

Doesn't the momentum of the car decrease when you press the clutch pedal and the car starts to slow down though?

You could easily increase the momentum of your car by having a friend drive alongside in a more powerful car throwing sandbags through the window of yours.

I'm just glad I'm not the owner. I'd be a be a bit annoyed if I found out someone was thrashing my car to within an inch of it's life.
