No mention of fitting these things to motorcycles yet I notice. Hopefully we'll be exempt since we don't cause congestion on bikes anyway. Be nice to lose the road tax and fuel excise too.

If they do issue them for bikes I wonder if they'll be able to supply me with a 6 volt positive earth satnav system for my Matchless G80

Seems to me that, in addition to all the reasons already put forward why this is a dreadful idea, there is another. Some parts of out public transport simply can't cope with more people. I travel into London on the Reading-Waterloo trainline and, for a period between 7:00 and 8:30, the trains on this line are pretty much standing room only from Twickenham onwards and the trains are running at about every 8 minutes. I don't reckon that there's all that much spare capacity there.

It seems to me that a better way to resolve the congestion is encouraging or, if it needs it, forcing time shifting of start and end times for both businesses and educational establishments. Why does the whole country need to operate on a 9:00-17:30 schedule? I realise that it is important for a lot of industry sectors to work when they're dependant sectors are also working but, I'm sure a lot of businesses could just as easily work 11:00-19:30 or even 07:00-15:30, there is still plenty of overlap!

Don't worry! They will have banned all classic cars & bikes by then,(they are environmentally unfriendly you know.)Think of the kittens etc .If you listen hard, you can almost hear the sound of moving goalposts.

I really think they have gone too far this time what a bunch of W#~&%$s.

I would really like to know how many votes a motorists political party would get? Maybe we should start one if 50% of all drivers riders etc voted that would be upwards of 13million votes!!! How many did the current communist (sorry labour) party get?

The party could use all the future money put aside for bombing the crap out of any country that dares to have a different way of life to us to provide a properly maintained and useful road and public transport network.

On the bright side I believe it would nearly be impossible to implement, remember the bright idea of computerising all NHS records a few years back?

Enough said

Gosh - you lot do get het up.

It won't happen as technically it's flawed. There are easier ways of making this happen - it's NL "fluff", and if you notice the timing, it's clearly a "tory stuffer" as insurance against them loosing the next election

Why is always an attack on drivers. Lets have some positive policies. Spend some of the money on a monorail over M25 between heathrow and Gatwick forget car sharing get a real alternative. Large free carparks at rail stations. Truth is the current rail capacity cannot take additional people unless they go to work at lunchtime and come home at midnight.

I had to laugh at the TV reporting of this proposal.

Some TV reporter gets to stand on a motorway bridge and say his piece.

Underneath, on the three lane motorway, some absolutely schocking lane discipline can be seen.

It doesn't matter how wide the road is, if folks don't know how to use it properly, then it will congest very easily.

My solution is to strictly enforce lane discipline. That way more cars will use the same road more efficiently.

Well it didn't take long for this 'New Labour' to come up with another tax after getting back in office - did it??

Am I completley thick or am I missing something here as I thought we already had a much cheaper pay per mile system of tax in place? - Tax on petrol - the more miles you drive, the more you use- the more you pay.

When will these tts work out that we don't all rush out and sit in jams because we like it or because we have nothing better to do but because we have to. Congestion?? A high proportion is caused by road planning that is cack - I can't beleive they can be so stupid so they must be designing roads with bottle necks to cause congestion. An example would be driving through London at 2am - still takes ages because of all the stupid lights that make you wait forever when there's no one else about -Its 2005 I'm sure lights could work better if they wanted them to.

As for Blair, I'd like to thank all those stupid w*nkers that voted him in again. However I find ironic that he can run around the world forcing democracy on other countries, when he is only in power by around a litle more than a third of the vote.

Not in my case. If they manage to make me fit one to the car it will not be disconnected. It may well continually blow fuses though.

I'm confused! Is this the same Government that has just refused the popular Manchester Metro Link Trams system money to expand? Over to you Mr Prescot!

The Metro Trams in Manchester are SO FULL, you have to back onto them, otherwise you'd never turn round to get off! Oh! I can't wait to use "public transport"

A third of the vote? Guess again! Labour recived 9.5 million votes. That's votes from only 21.6% of the population who are eligable to vote. Yet they hold 55% of parliamentary seats!

This will lead to economic collapse or serious civil disorder. I can't see how they'll possibly get away with it.

A Mori poll suggests only 16% would defy the government, while around 34% were opposed (don't know if that includes the 16%). I think I'm one of the 16%.

I've just been watching ITV news on the idiot box, and their poll says that 90% are against it.

Which seems about right to me.

It's a dead in the water policy proposal. Watch it get kicked into the long grass in Parliament today.

The only question left is why we pay folks to come up with these obviously unworkable ideas in the first place.

Isn't there some litter needs picking up ?

Two words: Think Tanks.

These fervent idealists are grasped, foaming at the mouth, straight out of politics and philosophy courses at university. They are set to work on statistics, and are essentially closeted from the real world. Driven by their own self-righteous lentilism, they come up with hare-brained schemes.

And this is these peoples jobs. They get paid lots of money to do that. They see no need for driving cars, leaving London, private services, going on holiday to anywhere decadent or basically justifying enjoying anything.

And that, my friends, is where your policies come from. That is what the world is coming to

With one of those you probably don't get much past walking speed so won't be covering many miles in a day. The technology won't be able to see you moving at all .
