Council Tax rant, anyone?

Whilst in this twisted world nothing surprises me - how on earth can this be true?

You seem to have a problem with Council Housing!
The strange world of Local Government finance means that Council tennants actually subsidise the rest of us. Do away with Council Housing and you will have to pay the council more each month, would that make you feel better?

In order to get a large pension you first need to earn a large salary, not easy in the public sector.
As for inflation proofing that is a red herring increasing a small pension by inflation annually takes a very long time to catch up with a pension which is adequate from the start.
PS The average Civil Service Pension is paid for 19 months after retirement age, what value is inflation proofing to that?
IIRC there's something saying that you're not obliged to accept more than a couple of quid in copper/schrapnel as part of any payment for goods & services.. ?
hence they can lawfully insist you provide larger denominations.. 50ps it is then...
or cheques.. they'll be charged about 20p for each cheque paid in, you'll be charged nothing.. (although you might get a shitty call from your bank..

I have no problem at all with council housing (I've bought one before now ) - I have a problem with low-life scrotes who don't pay their way. It was a generalaisation - don't go gettin yer arse in yer hands.
So let me get this straight...... council tenant pays reduced amount to council in rent, claims all the benefits that are going (my tax money), contributes no tax themselves, pays bog all in council tax (low band) yet uses just as much of the facilities (and probably more ...)
Yet if they got a job, lived in a non-council subsidised house, and generally contributed to society, I'd pay MORE??? That I'd need to see explained in better terms.

Seems silly doesn't it. Council Housing expenditure is ring fenced. All Council Housing costs are met from rental income etc. Some dodgy Councils manage to cross fund small non housing expenditure from the Housing Revenue account but the reverse is not usually true.
The twist comes in payment of Housing Benefit. Non Council tenants pay towards their LA's HB costs via Council Tax. Council Tenants also pay through Council tax but additionally have their rent account pillaged to pay for the Housing Benefit of other Council tenants so they are, in effect , paying twice.
To use typical figures of a few years ago from a rent of £57 per week some £27 is taken to pay HB, other costs are met leaving about 50P per week to pay for repairs. If that property is transferred to a Housing Association the HB levy is no longer paid and transfers to general Council Tax but you have £27.50 per week for repairs and upgrades.
Crazy isn't it...I'm only reporting it not defending it but it does spoil the old us subsidising them arguement.
How are you subsidising Council Housing Mondeoman?

Interesting, but does this argument factor in the right to buy? Council tenant rents for 15 years, council pays for property upkeep, then tenant buys property for 30% of the market value. Do they refund the maintenance costs incurred by the council over the years? I suspect not.
I'd suggest that the original cost of housing stock is not included in the figures you are working from. At some point in the past that housing stock was bought by tax payers; while tax payers and council tenants are not two mutually exclusive groups I'd suggest that the tax paying council tenant is not in the majority.
Call me a snob, but the step from council tenant to pikey is not a large one. I'll get me coat.

Er, yes, I like to paint with a broad brush. Saves me having to think too hard.
I'll readily admit that there are decent honest folk living in council housing, but they are in the minority. My nearest and dearest is a housing officer, so I am not talking completely out of my arse.
Your tone suggests you were a tenant (or was it a Pet Shop Boy?) as opposed to are a tenant, which doesn't exactly reinforce your noble concern for the reputation of council tenants, does it?

Pete - no offence intended. I didn't say tenants = pikeys now did I? Just that it was a small step from one to t'other. You stepped the other way, fair do's, that puts you way at the other end of the tenant spectrum in my book. Broad brush or not I don't think any of my tar even came close!
South Glos.
They have no money to control the speeding around my house, or fix the potholes. But in the last year they have put up 8 Street lights around my home (we don't want them). Though they deny having damaged my wall, and photo evidence isn't enough apparently...
I live on the edge of a small village, very few pedestrians and none at night. And this is the scheme they have put in place. My house is surrounded by fields in all directions.
8 lights installed, and we think another possibly on its way. We have some rooms that are lighter at night than in the day.
