Can diesels pop and bang?
Discussion
That certainly helps, though the primary cause is cylinders still being fuelled and yet not firing on the overrun. That's where the unburnt fuel comes from, and it naturally has some oxygen with it, so it can still burn if ignited... the extra oxygen from a leak may help form a more ignitable mixture, that's where leaks come in to it.
