There's a road legal Supra that consistently runs under 10 seconds (see it here doing 9.9 second run - www.turbobungle.com/pages/redlinrumble2004videopagepag.html ) at Santa Pod, the quickest i've seen it do was 9.4 @ 155mph! It does have 1400bhp though! It'll probably be at the Jap Show at Santa Pod this weekend along with a few Skylines and Evos that will run under 10 second quarters.

So what are the criteria for a “production car” then? How many of these high spec option cars have they sold or is it enough for it to just be on sale?
You can buy the Ultima GTR in the same spec from Ultima as a kit or you can pay them to build it for you. There are several of these cars for sale at the moment.
The Audi or Supra that are being mentioned are not available from the manufacturer in that form so are not Production cars.

Also running proper drag slicks doesn't count in my book either, you certainly don't use them on the street (usually).
I don't think anyone is saying 'Oooh, look at these, they're quicker than the Ultima' as they are clearly built for one purpose. You'd hardly do a lap or the 'ring in one would you.

Why has one not been on Top Gear?
Thats what I want to know. JC & the Hamster know of the car and used it in a feature at the NEC (I think,) so why hasn't it been on yet?
We emailed the guys at Ultima a while ago asking them this, and I think they said they were currently trying to break the record for the Nurburgring.
'We'? Are you saying that you're on the production staff of Top Gear, Chris?
Keep one eye out for Tiv drivers beating their way to your door with torches and rope.

Can that Audi really do 7sec quarter mile with street legal tires? Is it impossible to do sub 9 secs quarter mile without slicks? I think the Ultima GTR 720, if optimized for drag racing, quarter mile run, it'll definitely get into the mid 9 secs quarter.
as part of the old CC street car championship ( sleath competed in) all the cars had to drive from santapod to a petrol station, fill up, and drive back again

it doesnt honest matter whos tricked out jap mobile can do 7000 miles an hour on legal tyres the main point is that this is a british built super car which is now holds two world performance records and is cheep. i dont understand the mocking this thing is ace and ted and the factory deserve huge respect and praise
edited to say they actually have 3 records!! this one the 0-100-0 and lateral G-force records

Not taking anything away from the Ultima's remarkable achievement but..... Ultima's elitist attitude to other cars leaves a bad taste in my mouth. An example: refusing to take part is the Sunday Times 0-60 challenge because it wasn't against £250,000+ cars but Caterhams, Atoms, Nobles instead, and the Ultima is much too good to compare to those!
I think Mr Marlow is paranoid about being tarred with the 'kit car' brush - I believe there are plenty of other 'kit cars' which can come Factory assembled and use new running gear. Sometimes he seems to protest a little too much!
So..... is the Ultima a very good fast kit car or a true 'Supercar'?

they didnt compete and maybe they should have. but if you look at the other car envoloved they are all small engined lightweight cars which are very quick to 60. the test would be very close and wouldnt really show off the ultimas phenominal ability. also tests in papers are often very inaccurate with manufactures all using differnt tyres etc to gain advantage. also in these tests the personal opinion of the writer comes into play. eg "but of course the ultima won with its 720bhp it was all ways going too but the real winner is the ...". ultima decided to show there car off in a standardised way with performance records.
in my opinion they should hahve gone to the event but i dont see why them deciding against it shoudl really upset you
also the ultimas target opposition is big GT style cars instead of the smaller (but very quick) track cars in the test. wasnt the playing field the car was designed for.
hot66: There are drag radials for the streets, and semi slicks like your avons that can be driven on the street. But they are more like slicks compared to your run of the mill street tires. Hoosiers are slicks but they can be used on the streets, street legal.
In regards to the Sunday Times 0-60mph test, I think during that time. Ultima has already set the record for 0-60mph in 2.7 secs. So it's pretty much pointless for Ultima to do it again. I don't really remember all of the 0-60mph time achieved by those cars during that day. But I don't think any of them achieved 2.7 secs or quicker. Weren't the Atom running on slicks during that test?

They also beat their own 0-100-0 mph time again (3rd time) just recently - 9.4secs

Errr... check your facts.
Ultima did not 'refuse' to take part, they were invited but asked for the test to be done 0-150. The other manufacturers veto'd it (probably on the basis that at least 2 would struggle to even get to 150!), so Ultima withdrew.
For the record, a Noble M12 does 0-150 in 23 seconds, and Ultima does it in 11.8
.
So..... is the Ultima a very good fast kit car or a true 'Supercar'?
.Define 'Supercar'.I was having this disscusion over the weekend with a pal of mine whilst at LeMans. He has owned an Ultima and thinks the term is valid and I am soon to have my car on the road but do not believe the term supercar to be appropriate. The car is certainly capable of performing in a supercar fashion but I think there is alot more that goes to make something a supercar;pedigree, history, atmosphere ect.Obviously I am pro-Ultima and feel very lucky to have found myself in a possition to build/own one, but, I do not look at it as a supercar for reasons already mentioned.Autocar once tried to define what constitutes a supercar and concluded that it couldn't be done as there are so many grey areas and nuances and so many people have a different take on the remit.Bottom line is,supercar or not,it walks the walk.
