There's quite a bit of difference between that pic and mine !

Oh, absolutely. Unfortunately that probably wouldn't stop that case blowing your defence out of the water

'It's, they're arguing, a breach of planning requirements'

I get that but I'm arging it isn't 'storage' therefore no breech.

I know, and I'd agree with you, but I don't think there's much doubt as to which legislation they're going to cite.

'Since you are seeking planning permission, I strongly suggest a conciliatory approach'

I know I guess... you should have seen the first few drafts !

Been there, done that. I have to rant to someone else and get them to turn it into something that's not going to get be barred from the council offices for life

Planning is a pretty crappy service.

Best of luck

What happened?

I was searching for some info on DVLA forms (christ, they're complicated!) and found this thread.

Well I wrote a nicer letter giving little info.

They said that I didn't comply with their request and was techncally in violation...

I asked for all relevent info. and it seems that there have been successful prosecutions for having as little as 5 or 6 cars on your drive (needless to say there wasn't much info supplied)

However as I said I was trying to sell some they said they are 'monitering' the situation.

Meanwhile following repeated theft / damage I have built a high fence and hidden 2 behind it.

So only 5 are on view...

We'll see.

Thanks for the update.......

It seemed to me like one of your neighbours must have complained. Very odd that a council would try and get you on a 'change of use' clause (I suspect that's their legal argument ultimately) making the case that a collection is a trade somehow.

I wonder what they'll do?!

Yes they say that I have 'more cars than it is reasonably expected as a by product of living in the house'

IE I bought the house as it has lots of parking, rather than for the enjoyment of the house, which is correct but so what...

they say that for more than 4-7 cars (their words) a change of use is required.

No all my neighbours are happy... its an annoying old couple who live around the corner.

I did point out that I'd simply park them on the road if I couldn't keep them on the drive...

I can't believe it got to the stage it did really.

Have you considered throwing the council a curve ball and applying for planning permission for a 4 or 6 car garage?

Seems to me this situation needs diffusing.

I would speak to the local councillor explaining that the Authority has been unable to cite any legislation appropriate to the matter and that you want to approach the dispute with a neighbourly and helpful attitude but it is the Council who are not.

Ask the Councillor to set up a site meeting for themselves with the Planning Officer at which you would like to address these issues.

As for the Mortagage - I would tell them about sex and travel I'm afraid! If the lender has a charge on your house it will show at the Land Registry and is therefore a matter of public record anything more about your financial affairs is nobody else's business!

I am of course, assuming you're not the 'neighbour from hell' (no offence meant!). Assuming you're not, I think it's a feckin outrage that some jobsworth from the council should judge what is 'reasonable' for you. By whose right?? I've had up to nine cars in my possession - we will all know people with even more. And a change of use to what exactly?

It's very irritating to read about, let alone live through.

As for the old couple around the corner - take a peek at

I haven't read through all replies (only got as far as page 2) and so this may already have been mentioned elsewhere.......but I'd check if there is some kind of covenant on the house or area (it'll be in your deeds).

I remember when when buying mine that there was something about vehicles used for business/ and or logo'd not being permitted. Doesn't stop people though, and really it isn't a problem.

Mind you my old next door neighbour used to park one of those HUGE US style bonneted trucks that we seem to use in the UK for breakdown recovery of other trucks on the pavement outside the house. They only had one parking space so when combined with their four cars at differing angles on the pavement it did get a bit inconvenient and unsightly!

I never complained though!
