Working selling cars I go out pretty frequently with women driving, I find the main issue is that the majority of women need to see the front of the car, the furthest point of the bonnet. They do this by sitting is high up and close to the wheel as possible. Men on the other hand are happy just to acknowledge that its somewhere in front and so sit low and further back.

I understand this might be related to differences in the way male and female brains work but I'm not a psychologist so that might be bollox.

I think the bonnet theory is bang on. Old cars - Minis, early Festers, Escorts, Datsuns etc all had straight enough wings and bonnet which could be seen. Modern cars are all slopes and getting to know roughly where it is.

Big cars much the same. My E34 BMW was the best, well, next to the Capri although one needed binoculars to see to the end of the wings. Modern cars have more sloping going on and the end is harder to see.

I first started driving (private roads only!) when i was 12 so seat was forward to get to the pedals though i'm still short now!!! Anyway i carried on in that position until i was about 16 and it felt an uncomfortable position, so i finally moved the seat back. So what i'm saying is i don't think its' a confidence issue its' just getting into a position you're used too, though women who started driving at 17 have no excuse for having the seat that forward in the first place unless they're midgets that is!!!

I have a sister-in-law who sits too low and too close to the steering wheel. I pointed out that it was dangerous as the closer her head is to the A-pillar the more that A-pillar blocked her view. I proved it by walking towards the car in the blind spot and asking her when she could see mee with the seat in her normal position and then in my suggested position. In the revised position she also had better clutch control and smoother steering. But she still put the seat back into her usual positon "because it felt right"! Incidentally, this is ina Sierra estate.

Edited by Philbes on Monday 26th March 17:00

its also dangerous as the airbag will put their nose through the back of their neck!

Not in an old Sierra! What airbag?
But a good point with more modern cars. Also a good reason not to allow your hands to cross to the 'other' side of the wheel - a broken arm, and nose, could result if the airbag goes off..

the reason men are better drivers and dont sit so far forward in the car is that they cant multi task! when in a car a man can only think of the car (one thought at a time gents!) whereas women are always multi tasking, an example -

woman gets in car has to drive from a to b, sits close to steering wheel as she is tense and uptight thinking about driving, doing a days work, what are we going to have for dinner, got loads of ironing to do at home, gosh look at the time got to pick kids up from school, did i remember to post them bills , got to go to bank etc etc etc etc

man gets in car, oooh got to drive from a to b, yeh a nice relaxing drive!!!

actually it's scientifically proven that men are generally far more able to multitask than women

you mean thinking of everything BUT what they are supposed to be doing hehe

i think nail was hit earlier - confidence and needing to see the front of the bonnet, Lady S when in the drving seat has the same position as me, the only thing that gets moved is the RVM as shes a little shorter in the body than i am, where as my mum is a very VERY nervous driver, and takes up the polishing position, me and my dad cant get in her car without moving the seat back as we'll nut the windscreen - thats a tiny C3

My g/f is only 5ft4 so she sits pretty close to the steering wheel.
Its pedal position rather than the wheel that she has to reach so she is closer to the steering wheel than she would want.

My better half is also "vertically challenged", she's only 5'0" i.e. 1m50, and I can't even get behind the wheel to release the seat when she's adjusted it.... She has the seat up as high as it'll go and as far forward as it'll go and in a Golf that's "nose against the windscreen" time..... She'd rather do it the proper way but she can't reach the pedals otherwise!!!

Mind you the WORST are the east germans... they drive with both hands on top of the wheel both thumbs touching, the elbows touching the bottom of the wheel, seatbakcs more than upright almost leaning forward, and their noses wiping the windshield.... When buying a trabbie check for snot on the bottom of the windscreen...
great fun can be had slamming on in front of these feckwits and watching them panic!!

There is a young lass that parks up the road from my work, drives a Ford Ka - watching her get in and out is bloody hilarious - the she's got enormous shirt potatoes, but the seat is so close to the wheel they just wont go through the gap.

Once she's in, it's not so funny, it's down right worrying - her forearms are squashed up against her upper arms - her hands are seriously only a couple of inches from her shoulders. She cannot maneouver the car, simply because she cant bloody move her arms!!! Height has bugger all to do with it, she's only a few inches shorter than me, yet my 4'9" friend seems to be able to drive her KA in a perfectly normal position.

Mark, it's a spacial awareness thing. Women (and I am generalising here) tend to be a little lacking in this ability compared to men and need to see the end of the bonnet to know where it is (in general) whereas blokes (usually) have a good sense of where the car ends without having to see it. (Don't forget, I'm generalising here and not aiming to criticise or belittle any particular gender)

that's because we don't feel the need to make a big song and dance about it... still I suppose if it was purported to be the only thing we were good at, we may hold it in as much esteem as the ladies

Hey! Don't disrespect the "gangsta lean", you never know when someone packing heat might start shooting while you're cruising the mean streets of, er, Byfleet.

Not to be confused with the other defensive driving position, in which the aim is to ensure that the only thing visible above the doorline of the car is a baseball cap, preferably white. "It's like sitting in me bathtub, innit."

"gangsta lean", you ain't seen gangsta lean till you've been out in a taxi with the PH boys on a curry night......

do you know that statistics have been shown and proven that drink driving convictions and tbe larger proportion Men. Do you also know that statistics have also been shown and proven that in road traffice accidents the larger proportion are Men. Strange but true!!!!!!! think that speaks for its self

Do you know that statistics have also proven that 99.9% of statistics are made up. I've been shown statistics that although women are less likely to be involved in an accident, they are far more likely to be the cause of one. Not very strange but probably just as true

Of course your failure to acknowledge that, per mile driven, the accident rate for women is higher, albeit usually cheaper insurance claims because lower speed, and your abject failure to utilise the board's quote feature correctly, despite it being extremely simple - tends also to speak for itself. Personally as a man I'd rather be good at only doing one thing at once, than crap at doing several.
