Hi Folks,

I want to buy a number plate but don't have the car yet....it may be a while before we get said car.......

How long can I keep the plate on retention?
Does it cost anything to renew the retention certificate?

Any help would be appreciated.....

Thanks

You can keep a plate on a Cherished transfer retention document [V778] which is valid for 12 months. Loads of info here www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/cherish.htm

Looking to get PER 1L then?

£25 per year to renew and you can do it for as long as you like

Thats basically what DVLA told me a couple of weeks back

You can also put the plate which you are removing from a car on retention. so when you sell it you can put the original back on the car

Hope that helps

I have been given some private plates but there is no retention certificate with them. They have never been registered to a car. How do I get a retention certificate? Please help.

What do you actually have, if it's just 2 bits of plastic with some numbers on them then you don't have ownership of that cherished number.

Holy (and unnecessary!) thread resurrection!

If you have just been given two lumps of plastic, you can't put them on your car. Who gave you them and how did they buy them? The owner of the vehicle or current retention certificate will need to transfer ownership to you...
