(Er After last weekend, Miniman can comment on the 996tt being caned through 2nd 3rd and 4th from about 20mph upwards.)

I was just about to post, actually. Having experienced the 996 do the 40 to 70 blast, I could only say that if the Saab can do it quicker then me backwards with a blunt instrument

I'll second that - I'm still trying to recover my eyes from the back of my skull, oh and Daz - I think one of my ears is still flapping about in the footwell, could you post it on if you find it??!

I truly didn't know what quick was until Daz took me for a blast!

The Aero is a 4 cylinder 2.3 litre engine. Just the difference between that and the standard 2.3 is a high pressure turbo and suspension mods etc.

Definatly a 4 cylinder.

My Dad has the 2.3t Vector. Which has a light pressure turbo. His boss has the 2.3T HOT Aero Estate which by all accounts goes like sh**t off a very shiney shovel.

I know when my dad got his, Saab were and still are quoting in their sales literature about beating the 911 between 40 and 70 in the Aero.

Don't remember in Clarkson said it was the 911 Turbo could it have been a Carrera instead?

I thought the hottest was a 3.0 V6 Turbo.

They don't do a 3.0 V6 Turbo at least not in the current lineup.

There was a 3.0 V6 but I think thats been dropped in favour of the 2.3t as the emmissions were too high and the power wasn't as high as the 2.3t.

I think the current line up is:

2.0t - 150bhp
2.3t - 220bhp (Was 185bhp last year but the power has been upped as the 3.0v6 has gone.
2.3T HOT - 250bhp

and the 2.2td - Bit of a dog by all accounts and straight out of the vectra/omega.

The emmissions are low on the Aero considering the power and size of it. IIRC they're much lower than Merc's and BMW's

isn't it the 911 turbo's 70 - 197 that counts?

Clarkson does like to make stupid comments (like a honda vtec engine has never failed - reaaaaaaaly?).

Anyway does illustrate that all the standard methods of comparing car performance are fairly pointless. I'd much rather manufactures gave us the cascade curves as its a far more useful basis for comparison.

I did look for the most modern Saab I could find them. I also couldn't quite remember which Vectra..sorry 93 they had on Top Gear.

No seriously though unless this new mystery V6 or whatever has a shed load more torque than its recent predecessor then there is a serious gap between the two cars.

Only thing I could think of was does the 911 make it to 70 in 2nd like the Saab did on TG ? If you look at the gear ratios the 911 has a taller 2nd gear than the Saab so it would seem likely it does.

The only real proof of course is to see the two flat out acceleration and velocity curves and compare (the 'cascade' diagrams ?).

Saab owners - I am not denegrating your loverrrly cars, if anything I am merely checking up on Clarkson's spouting. I don't really give a monkey's which is faster 40-70. Honest..

PS I'm pretty convinced that the researchers of even Clarkson check this site regularly. Whaddaya reckon ?

Unfortunately the owner in question bought his car when it was a couple of years old - and it's and A-reg! Apart from a few crucial bits of welding needed at MOT time it's still running.

I guess the claims must have come from a Saab advert at the time - I'm just curious as it may be possible. A 911 Carrera put out, what 280bhp and I don't know how much torque so a turboed Saab on overboost in cool conditions might do the job ? I wonder if the details are lurking on the web somewhere....

We just need to remember that it is between a certain amount of speed (40 and 70mph). They didn't show how much the saab beat it by and i'd bet it was close.

The Saab isn't faster than the 911 Turbo it just happens to outaclerate it in a certain gear.

The Saab is geared this way, as most of the 9-5 spend their life on a motorway and I know thats when I would like the power to come in (2nd Gear 40mph) as i'm joining the motorway.

You saw the way it handled on Top Gear its not a sports car its an executive barge

Offord run a few Saab turbos in various states of tune for some of the loan cars. Bear in mind I'm used to a Griff and a Cerbera so I have an idea of mental acceleration I have to say a decent Saab turbo is pretty bloody quick.

Our old non turbo 900 is pretty bloody slow but it is good for taking stuff ot the tip

You can do it my way and buy them after they have depreciated.

I picked up a 97 9000 with 125K on the clock (just run in) for my brother a year ago, £2000.

Lot of car for the money, looks and drives like new...

This thread is hilarious. There are 911 owners up and down the country with itchy sphyincters since Sunday's top gear. FFS guys it's a saab and it may accelerate slightly better in a given gear but that by no means puts it in a similar bracket to a 911 in terms of performance (overall) and general driving dynamics.

It's an outragously funny case of penis envy and 'my 911 is the best car in the world.. ever' mentality

I've got the de-tuned version of the 95 2.5T and sure it's rapid, it'll quite happily eat tosser waggens like Golf GIT's and alike, but it's not even close on the Chimaera let alone a 911.

They say 911 drivers are a bunch of small penis equipped bell-ends, and sadly some of you are doing a damn good job of proving them right.

My neighbour has a shitbox astra GTE that's tuned, it'll certainly give the TVR a run for it's money, but who cares; different car, different league etc, etc.

I've stopped laughin now..

40-60 in 4th of 5 seconds dead - pretty rapid I think.

www.car-videos.com/performance/speed.asp?Speed1=40&Speed2=60 lots more listed there but I suspect not in 4th gear!! (0.8s for the Macca F1!!)

Exactly. Who cares if car A will accelerate from 40-60 in 4th faster than car B if car B can just drop a cog and blow car A into the weeds?
