Are cars over-tyred today?

On any road car virtually with large low profile tyres and firm suspension, hit a bump mid bend in the damp or wet and test your sphincter muscles to the max as the car slides towards oncoming traffic I've had this happen when driving at very moderate speeds in a mondeo estate which was wheeled and tyred that way from Ford!
