I don't agree with their 2 tier pricing either with those with a trade card getting stuff for some half the shelf price. .
Bet you'd agree with it if you had a card wink

I refuse, where ever possible to use Halfords anymore, after the manager of the local one accused me of buying a fanbelt at a jumble sale and bringing it back for a refund.

I was trying to work out what belt I needed to fit the new Zetec engine in my Westfield and the one I bought wasn't correct, so I took it back, only to find they didn't have the next size, so I asked for a refund. Upon which I found I had left the receipt at home, the manager refused to give anything but vouchers, which I appreciate he is within his rights to do, but I thought as it was in a Halfords box I'd try anyway, where upon he told me I might have bought it from a jumble sale!

I could have slapped the ccensoredt...
YEAH!!!

I can see how the store manager was at fault as he left the receipt at home!!!

The average (wo)man off the street probably costs Halfords more to deal with in order to find out what they want ("...I'd like a bulb for a blue ford...not sure what year...what's a sidelight?)whereas the trades person asks for what they know they need

And they are in business still because they have a steady stream of idiots coming in all day every day and paying through the nose for consumables and fluids ...

and bikes....

Apart from the Halfords professional tool range which is fairly decent value for money when bought with the trade card and occassional deals they have on motor oil I don't spend alot with them.

To be fair to Halfords, there is a place for them in the market, and the majority of consumers are not car enthusiasts. There is no shortage of alternative options for people who choose to be discerning about what and where they buy

Just like hi-fi enthusiasts don't buy from Currys.

It's convenience. No-one has to buy from them but they obviously do.

As to disapproving of trade discount? confused

precisely. they are a business and people are clearly willing to pay over the odds as they want a nice clean retail environment rather than dealing with their local motor factor.

halfords don't even stock brake pads, filters or spark plugs for my car, whereas my local motor factor has those plus suspension arms, bushes, shocks etc. sat on their shelves. the only thing halfords are good for is air fresheners.

The bolts to remove the bulb cap on my foglight has sheared, will they fix that for the £5.99 fitting price?

It's a retail markup.

If you have a trade card you can get parts like bulbs from Halfords at motor factor prices.

So why not just charge everyone the same price?

Like I said it's two tier pricing.
welcome to the retail world

they are getting all the customers at the best price they are prepared to pay

like when you buy a large cup of coffee instead of a small
even if it's twice the size, you don't really imagine it costs twice as much, to serve a large one compared to a small one?

and all the sales in clothes shops etc - do you imagine they buy too much stuff EVERY season, so are forced to sell it at a loss?

is it really cheaper for ford to fit manual window winders in the back of their cars? no, but they still charge less for that

they all know - customer A is prepared to pay up to price A, customer B is only prepared to pay up to price B - lets get both customers by pretending that they are both getting value for money

there are many many different examples of it, in every retail market

its been well known that on some products halfords prices take the mick as they are relying on serving customers who really have little knowledge of what they are buying and need the item that day.

Yesterday I needed a fairly large jubilee clip and some wiper blades, halfords wanted £4.99 - for 1 2.5inch clip and the best part of £25 for 2 blades but instead i went to Wilkinson and paid £1.09 each for the blades and £1.29 for a clip and as far as i can tell they work perfectly!

Bulbs at ten quid? You are very lucky. Try going there with a leaky aircon compressor. Just this week (6.6.17) I discover the leak and phoned round for prices, Dealer A £275.00, dealer B £180, Dealer C £235, Halfords (the motorists' friend) £725.00 + VAT.
I do wish I had their quotation in writing, I would have published it in the local rag.

I recently went to Halfords to buy a single filament dipped headlight bulb for my VW Golf. I thought £8.90 was a bit extortionate but bought one anyway. I later saw the same bulb online for £1.46 with free postage and got a refund on the Halfords bulb. What a bunch of thieves!

Halfords was the only place open, £9.99 they charged. Eurocarparts sold me one for £2.89.
Was it the same quality bulb, there are a lot of cheap crap around which last a few months rather than a few years.

Needed a battery for the ms fiesta urgently, halfords wanted £96 with a trade card, which was about £10 less than eurocarparts, online click-and-collect with a 35% winter deal. Standard pricing ECP would have been £160!
