Nine MGs (that I know of to date) taken to my local M.O.T centre fail their first test and are writen off as it would cost more to repair than their worth.

1971 Triumph 2000 Mk2, Never failed yet but this year I had an adviser.............. tail pipe may need replacing next year and possibly 2 of the original Michelin ZX tyres.( slight sidewall cracking but still got loads of tread left.) 30,000 only from new still in pristine condition.
I'm sorry but 39 year old tires? yikes Get all 4 replaced asap. Rubber degrades over time, all tires these days are date stamped. I'm sure there was a thread in the classic forum on here where a members friends car had the original tires on, one gave way and in the accident that followed the occupants of the car were either very seriously injured or killed. frown

Yeah that. Rubber desgrades over time, causing it to harden and reduce the amount of grip.

My '89 205 GTI still had the original rear tyres on it when I bought it - those got changed very quickly indeed!!

My 2001 Ford Focus 2.0 ESP hasn't passed every MOT
EFA.

How the fk can it have passed every MOT but failed twice?!?
Well Duh! - Trivial ste - so trivial that its marked on the MOT sheet as a fail (pure beuracratic excercise), but fixed for free instantly. (ie. It doesn't have to be taken away to be fixed and go through a whole new MOT test again). Pretty much LESS even than an advisory.

Of course I've had a couple of advisories too.
