Ah, that's the same colour as my old one. Mine was a 1988 2.2 and went like a train.

Fabulous machine that I hung onto for years - and the popping and banging while heel and toeing never failed to make me smile.

Mine had the removable steel sunroof, which my mates thought was a hangover from WW2 Tiger tanks - once removed you could stand on the seats and feel like a proper tank commander...

+ 1. The car to drive whilst Britain's roads are ravaged.

I nearly bought one of these as a shed years ago, but wimped out. Good shed, but the car just looks too long - too many memories of SWB Quattros methinks hehe

My mates mums boyfriend had one of these, used to relish getting a lift to school in it, she was used to a Mk1 Cortina (was mint but she ruined it (: ) but she used to use his red Audi, was brand new at the time, a 5 cylinder but not sure if it was a 2.0 or 2.2 but it felt fast to a 13 year old me, the front used to rise when she put her foot down in a most impressive manner and it made a lovely noise.

I had a H reg Audi 100 with the same engine, only a 2.0 but it moved quite well for what looked like a massive barge, removed the cat and replaced with straight pipe which made it sound fantastic and freed up a few bhp, the difference between a knackered cat and no cat, performance wise it was as quick as my mates 80 with the 2.0 4 cyl despite us both expecting the 80 to be quicker being smaller.

I love 5 cylinder engines, had the Audi, Volvo T5, Fiat Coupe Turbo, more characterful and powerful than a four without much extra weight and avoids my issue with sixes, that, at lower power outputs and tunes, without turbos etc can feel a bit flat even though they move quite well, due to the power delivery and smoothness.

The second car I owned was an 80cd saloon in about 1994, looked the same as this one

It was a 2ltr 5cyl, quite a step up from my first, a Fiat 126 ! My girlfriend was very impressed by it's 4 electric windows and sunroof.
I paid £850 for it, drove the wheels off it for 9months then sold it for the same as I paid.
I remember a run back from Birmingham, playing with a Jag keeping the speedo at around 120 for most of the journey.

ETA I prefer the looks of the saloon to the coupe, unless we're talking Quattros.

980kg?! Wow, that's light. I assumed these things were big enough to be well over a tonne. With that engine it's a characterful alternative to a Golf GTI.

But yeah, I'd want the 5-pot soundtrack. I learnt to drive in a Volvo V70, so I think I will always have a soft spot for anything with a straight-five. It's that mix of refinement when you're cruising and a nice warble under acceleration; a four will never come close and a six sounds much more sensible. I could probably be persuaded by a V10; a mate's dad had an M6 convertible which sounded a lot the apocalypse. Or a hairdryer.

The earlier 80 GTE (the 1st to use the Golf Gti engine), AFAIK weighed about that much, so the later car surely would have weighed more.

smile - I have a friend who had one of these ( yeah, yeah, I know what you're thinking everyone has a 'friend' who has had every car going ! ) when they were quite new. Standard suspension was very soft ( see below ) and the power steering too light for my tastes but it did sound lovely with the 5-pot

Was RS1600i performance almost in a straight line....sadly not when it came to the bends

I think the reason I bought the scirocco was cos I wouldn't have been able to insure the audi...

always loved this shape, mega bonus was it just didn't seen to attract yobbo's as much as domestic offerings.

Thats a fantastic picture!

I like this, I'd much rather have that than the Audi 80 Saloon of similar value that I have as a daily at the moment - if only for its slightly increased interestingness.

Always respected these cars. They have thats 80s "coolness" to them.

Nice boxy shape, and they look so mean in the UR Quattro guise.

I was on my third one before I realised this slides into a holder at the top of the boot when removed...
