RE: Skoda Fabia vRS
Discussion
I bet it would be bloody 'orrible on a track. It's diesel. It's just about OK on a road hoon, depending on the type of road, because you accept that it is a road car. Limited rev range, the noise, the nature of the power/torque band, ye gods, I bet my vRS would just be plain nasty on a circuit. All of its shortcomings would stand out and scream at you all at once, which they generally don't when it's on the road.

What i want to know is how the fabia competes against other cars in a race!
including petrol and other diesel models.
As for handling, I think you would be asking the impossible for it to compete with a good naturally aspirated hot hatch, such as a CTR, Clio 182, 306 GTI, etc etc...including petrol and other diesel models.

They can be made into fast capable machines, but it takes a lot of modifying to make them really capable, and even then, they are still TDI's so you will never quite get rid of the disadvantages that go with that...
I liked my vRS, it was a great little car, but it was NOT a hot hatch no matter how much they tried to say otherwise. But I would have one again tomorrow if I needed a car with cheap running costs.

The last 1000 of the old discontinued vRS Paul. The LE run out version is in Race Blue, with grey leather piped in blue, and loads of extra kit on it.
There is no vRS version of the new Fabia for a year or two yet, so i'm having another of the old version.

Ah yes. I've seen one in town. Lovely colour, much better than the other colours. Nice one mate. You gonna get a tuning box for this one? I hear the digital ones on ebay are much better than the cheap ones, and of course, you can take it off and sell it and basically lose no money when you sell the car There is no vRS version of the new Fabia for a year or two yet, so i'm having another of the old version.
I would love to chip it. But like my current car, I can't really risk it. It's a company car, so there will be the matter of declaring a mod to the company insurers, as well as the VAG warranty becoming void too. If I stuffed it, or the drivetrain went bang, I could be in big trouble. If I could do it all legitimately, and the company, the insurers, and Skoda were happy, then I would. But I can't. If it was my own car, no problem.
Guess i'll just have to rely on skill to keep up with the big dogs, or whatever Tom's driving

Just the subject I was looking for!!
I've just come back from N.Yorkshire in my vRS. Just over 500 miles at the real motorway speed limit and 62-64mpg for both trips! Incredible. It has to be one of the best 'multi tool' cars ever made. Its quick and eco. For the Money - about £11k brand new on 3yrs0%. It may not keep up with a Clio 182 or a Civic but it wasn't really built to- I cant imagine them getting anywhere near that mpg. It doesn't handle amazingly but it is pretty good. Its requires a completely different technique. In corners you need to trail the throttle to keep the engine working, it doesn't respond well to stabbing at the throttle.
I'm told the best thing you can spend money on, is a rear anti-roll bar from Jabbasport. Makes for lift off oversteer and gets rid of understeer etc etc. Make it feel more like a hot hatch. I think I'd go for that before chipping.
I've had few little niggles but generally very happy with my choice. (upgraded from a SDI non turbo Fabia of 3/4years in march)

I'd totally recommend one except for the fact it's so heavy for a small car. What did they put in it? Lead roof lining?
Honestly though, has anyone ever put one on a weigh bridge? I've seen a few mapped not run what they were promised on a dyno, but the speed defies that power claim. I think they are lighter than suggested but nigh on as powerfull to be as quick as they are...
Personally I like the new Seat Ibiza Cupra 160 Tdi, runs ~ 200bhp with a remap and has decent brakes etc to boot.

Is there anyone here who owned one would would totally not recommend one of these??
Nope, they're ruddy great.I was really sad to see my old one go, it has been a fantastic little car. The new one is more of the same, but a bit more 'shouty' being in race blue with red calipers and pimped out tinted glass, it's not as subtle as the black one was, and is a bit 'boy racer'. But anyway, here's to the next three years.
