RE: Driven: Porsche Boxster Spyder
Discussion
The rear of the standard Boxster has never looked right; it looks a bit to like the front. It just looks like something they forgot to style.
Perhaps that’s the Porsche way; build the car to be efficient and let the style evolve. Well the rear on this looks right. But the less costs more idea just doesn’t work here. It’s not enough to make a huge difference to performance.
Customers are ordering lots of options and putting the weight back to standard. That should tell Porsche something. They want a Boxster with these looks, but the practical usability of the standard car. Perhaps this is a clever way by Porsche to test public opinion.
Ditch the bland rear styling of the standard Boxster. Give all Boxster’s the Spyder rear and other style improvements; a proper style identity.
Then develop a proper electric folding roof that functions well at all speeds and restore the comfort items (keep the lightweight doors).
Offer the lowered suspension as an option and do really high performance version, probably a Turbo.

I've been doing a little Boxster research and there have been previous 'Spyder' versions of the Boxter in 987 and 986 forms. The last was known as the RS60 Spyder.
At least with this 2011 spyder they made more substantial changes. I sort of wish there was one distinct high performance Spyder and leave it at that like the GT3 RS line even though I thought the GT3 was it.

Only Porsche would have the front to charge more for less.
Or Renault with the stripped down Megane R26R, for example...All the people criticising this just don't get it (obviously), but there are plenty of others, like Aerial Atom or '7' owners, who do.
I have owned both the Cayman S and a supercharged Exige S and I have to say, I do get this car. My lap times in the Cayman S on track days were on a par with the Exige and I found the balance and poise to be just as precise. One problem I had with the Exige was that I couldn't get the wife into it. Not only did she physically struggle to get through the door but once in, she'd whinge incessantly if I went over 30mph (think it was the small cabin and supercharger whine that scared her)!
I see the Spyder as a more track focused version of the Boxster S or the Cayman S, that might even be a little faster than an Exige S around a track. With that and its good looks, I would err towards it. But the fact that I might have a chance of getting the missus in it without a moan-athon now and then sells it for me! Nice one Porsche - finally justification for another "track" car!

Sounds like the perfect car! M.
Just got one.. And its the best car I have ever driven.. My daily driver is an E46 M3 and i also have a 997 Turbo.
So Have some comparisons to go by.. All three cars are fabulous to drive.. But this is the one i would go with for a Sunday dive out..
Why ??? Ok not got the power of the Turbo But its swift enough and sounds so good and is so involving Thats it.. Its being part of the car... And that look So different to any boxster or any other car really... You get noticed in this one and I like that too
Well done Porsche 10/10...
