Why would you bother with B6 S4s when you can have an E39 M5 for the same money, or indeed less? I didn't. Relatively speaking then, not a performance bargain IMHO.

The E39 is quite a bit older though and not as discreet. This is what I like about the S4, bar a couple of badges you'd never know!

Reliability!

The m5 is a great car but it has a tendency to eat its clutch if driven hard often enough. The s4 is very nearly bullet proof barring a radiator issue which there is a fix for.

11 grand for a lardy saloon car with the engine bolted in the bumper not a bargain and while fast it ain't a sports car
Exactly.

Plus it will go wrong regularly and cost a fortune to repair. VAG spend all their money on interiors and marketing, so skimp on the mechanics.

V. thirsty in modern standards for the V8. Can't beat that sound though, esp if you put a nice milktek on it. biggrin

biggrin though they do make a damn good 2.0 diesel engine.

& the S4 & a 4wd Audi is a comfortable, safe wagon. Audi don't do sporting saloons/coupes quite like BMW.

It's not meant to be the sportiest thing out there- but it ticks many many boxes.
Well built, comfortable, reliable, perfect V8 sound, 4WD and in the avant model bags of space!

I'm talking from first hand experience. But of course that is irrelevant on PH hehe

We've had one for about 4 years now and love it. Beautifully torquey V8, a very good auto 'box (with paddles if you want more entertainment) and a pretty nice interior.

Handling wise it's typical of Audi of that period and not sharp, but it's in keeping with the character of the car and it's not 'bad'. I really enjoy driving it. 4WD too which helps in the snow. smile

Tax is only two hundred odd quid and MPG aside, it's been pretty reasonable to run.

Buy it for the engine alone - god i love that engine ...

anyway I digress, I don't care what clarksonnites say about Audi, the S4 in my opinion still has an understated coolness about it - A 2.0tdi A4 made to look like an S4? Well maybe Clarkson has a point with that one - I always think the S and RS Audi's rise above cock jibes anyway - much like many of the BMW M cars do

MPG will be irrelevant as I'll be doing less than 7000 miles a year. Way I see it the less miles I do the better the car I can get! I imagine the MPG is in the high teens?

I averaged low 20's in mine. As above, it made a fab noise, was brilliantly well built (better than the current A4), and handled great.

It even git me up a muddy field to a hunt once, where a number of "proper" 4x4's had got stuck.

MPG wise we get high teens on average. On a motorway twenty-something is easily achievable. Boot it around though and 14 is easy too smile

I am on my iPhone waiting for my wife to come out if waitrose so will reply later, but I will say my 2005 S4 avant in manual guise was the worst car I have owned!

It fails in so many ways, just a completely pointless car.

The auto on the other hand address' nearly all of the issues apart from the almost scary amount of understeer, when people told me the engine was in front of the front axle I thought they were kidding, they wern't!!

Tax will be £435 a year and can only go up!
Why would tax be £435? its pre March 23rd 2006 so should be more like £245 per year shoul'nt it?
http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/road-tax/?deriv=2597...
Yes,
definitely £245 pre March 2006!!
http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/OwningAVehicle/HowToTaxYourVehicle/DG_10012524

Ok, I see its Bank K* so as you state £245, that means my ATR's tax will only go up £30 next year.

No it's not.

The Jaguar XJR is the biggest performance bargain.

4.0 supercharged V8, 370 BHP, a decent one can be had for 3K.

There are ways around the understeer issues i am sure.As for k ink's comments what an idiot. I am not like honda or apple fanboys but do appreciate the build quality of audis. If as k ink claims he had one and it was disastrously unreliable then he had either bought a second hand unloved and abused version or a monday car. The s4 is very reliable aside from its known "issues" radiator tyre wear due to bad geometry wiper mech and i believe rear arb.

Otherwise rock solid and dirt cheap to run aside from fuel. The known issues are easily fixed permanently and at low cost.
