Hi guys, i'd appreciate some advice on deciding on a title for my dissertation, i'd like to do it on the car industry so im trying to come up with potential titles. Im doing a business degree, taking mostly marketing courses this year, so it makes sense to focus on this area. I'm meeting my supervisor on Tuesday, but am struggling to come up with even general ideas to put to him, so any suggestions are much appreciated (even if they are outside of the marketing area of the industry, or even outside motoring im getting so desperate!).

<> The introduction of the AM Cygnet and its affect on the company's brand is interesting, but I dont think there will be much to write about it (the dissertation needs to be >10,000 words), as its a rather limited roll-out and only to selected exisiting customers. Incorporating the reason behind it (stricter emissions rules) and making the question concern the industry as a whole has met a dead end as from what I have read most other manufacturers will not need to dramatically adjust their product offering as their parent company's frugal cars are counted, e.g. a Fiat Panda will bring Ferrari's average emissions down.

<> Ford's 'One Ford' global strategy is another one I am interested in but struggling to fine-tune into a suitable question. For example a question around its effect on its brand image in America, but its probably too early days to have much data available, and as it will still sell models like the F150 and Mustang, while the European models like the Focus are well-recieved and selling well, the same problem arises of it not being a big enough topic for 10,000 words.

Any suggestions much appreciated.

I did mine on the problems UK dealers have with supply and cash flow when new registrations were released in March and September, it was about 10 years ago mind and my comparison was with the old August 1st new reg.

I emailed hundreds of dealerships and TBF the majority replied so I had no trouble in accessing the data, I also got plenty of information from SMMT.

What about "The decline of the British motor industry, bad marketing, bad management or just bad cars"

Few possibilities:

- The introduction of hybrid / super economical vehicles and how they affect perception of a company's brand. Doesn't necessarily need to focus on 1.x ltr bland-wagons, the M division's cars have got alot more mpg / bhp over the years for example.

- Importance of having high-performance cars in a model lineup; do they improve brand perception lower down the model lineup? (Does AMG affect general Merc sales, for example?)

-The brand value of a manufactuer's presence in motorsport? A good case in point to research might be BMW who pulled out of F1, then you've got Ferrari, Mercedes still in there. Is it worth the ROI after you consider R & D benefits, brand exposure, etc.

My dissertation was for a Marketing degree and focused on the car industry as well...it was around how peoples' images of brands are affected by the introduction of environmentally friendly cars...

Or the full title:

An examination of how the Consumer Evaluation of Fit is affected by environmentally friendly line extensions in the UK car industry

Definitely made it a lot easier doing the dissertation on a subject I was interested in...

Good luck!

This is what mine focused on...BMW are known for top engineering, good driving cars - are they affecting their brand with the introduction of Efficient Dynamics etc?

It's easy to do one on British Leyland, there is plenty of information on it.

aronline.co.uk is pretty useful, masses of information on why the company failed.

Interesting topic.
I did my dissertation in 2004 on the impact (in the UK) of grey market cars and if potential barriers still existed which could demonstrate weaknesses in European free trade laws or lack of available information on the benefits of the single market.

Hi everyone,

I'm back at university and I am too looking for a dissertation topic related to the motor industry.

I'm looking to discuss about anything, it could be related to Hybrid/Electric or Hydrogen vehicles.

For instance, one of my mates chose 'How electric vehicles are as Eco-friendly or sustainable as what car manufacturers say they are.' (Due to heavy pollution to create the batteries, the hefty price of changing them once the maximum number of cycles are reached and how the batteries pollute when recycled).

Would anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers! smile
