Maldonado. Not of this planet..
Discussion
The extraordinary thing about Mouldynado is that he appears to have become a worse driver during his time in F1. This is the driver who, bizarre as it now seems, won the GP2 championship in 2010. Previous GP2 champions include Rosberg, Hamilton and Hulkenburg, so there are some big names on that trophy.
Maldonado then won the 2012 Spanish GP in a Williams. He raced in fine style, and was a a worthy winner on the day.
So how has he regressed to the point that he is now viewed as a useless pay-driver and a liability? It's very odd.

I think there is something wrong with the nut holding the wheel.Suspect that it is the case that when it was getting poor traction he kept the power on (presumably as he could have done in the older cars) but with these new ones the traction control is more based on the feet that computers...

Has Maldonado gotten worse as he's got older?
'gotten'Yuk
he looked like a proper rank amatuer crashing in qually- seemed to hold full lock and just hope the wall would stop coming towards him rather than try something different, the kind of "feeze up" a dhead like me or you might do in the face of an accident but not racing drivers...

And PDVSA paid Williams $25 million to get Mouldy Pasta out of his contract and go to Lotus. Add to that what they paid would have paid Lotus then it's just piling on the PDVSA's debt burden - http://www.eluniversal.com/economia/130123/pdvsas-...
I don't think $25m is much in the scheme of their $40bn debt... thiscocks said:
Makes me laugh all these idiots slagging drivers off when they go through bad periods / crash. One of the quickest drivers on the grid wouldnt be driving this season (clue- hes the team mate of this threads topic) if the short sighted critics had their own way.
One matured, one didn't.MAL can be quick on his day, but I haven't seen the same spark that he had at his Williams peak.

You are missing one point and I believe that it's an important one. When Roman was going through his troubles, he could see he was making mistakes, was apologetic and changed his approach to improve the situation. Maldanado doesn't acknowledge that he is doing anything wrong.RGambo said:

Uh, do you know anything about his history in lower formulae? I am going with a Nope given the above.Jasandjules said:

Admit I dont know much about his lower formula performances other than he won many races and the GP2 title, was pretty good at Monaco and had some crashes (who doesnt?). In my view its better to be fast and a bit ragged and get to F1 with good results rather than be extremley mediocre (Senna jr, Sutil) and ponce about doing nothing. He didnt crash that often last year, and this year he is driving a dodgey car and his team mate is one of the quickest out there driving at his best. I just think all this critisism is pretty harsh considering he has just made a couple of mistakes in practice / qualy out of 5 races. I can only imagine how mental the internet forums would have gone if they were around when DeCesaris was binning it early-mid 80's.
