Just heard on sky sports news that the teams are fitting Spark Blocks to the cars for this weekends GP. reporters words were something along the lines of 'to make the racing more spectacular'.

Haven't watched any F1 for a few years now, but have heard, well seen on my facebook all the complaints, of how boring the new engine regs have made the sound and spectacle of modern F1.

But is the answer really fake sparks??

And there was me thinking rallying was having stupid ideas such as mid stage put stops for tyre changes!

Not for me ... never been bored by F1 ever even during those many years of German driver domination.... parts one (MSC) and two (VET) .... and just maybe, three (ROS)in 2014. If speculation about the uncertainty of the latter statement you still find boring best you stay away.

F1 aint for you.

They used to always run wear/skid blocks - hence the sparks you used to get back in the 80s and 90s.

Some of this years racing has been brilliant.

I don't like the sound the current F1 cars make but there have been some great battles on track this season. A few sparks seems a bit silly but so long as they don't interfere with the racing, I don't much care.

The original blocks were for a purpose and the sparks were a by product. These are merely for show. Maybe they can end the controversy over engine noise by adding little loudspeakers and some V12 recordings….

I do follow a lot of the fan chatter on the internet and forums and you do often see (some) fans come out and say "Bring back V12s, sparks, manual gearboxes, etc". So really the teams are just listening to the fans for once!

edit.. Here are some threads of people all nostalgic for sparks and wanting them back:

is that an actual game? the power-ups could all be banned or current f1 tech. hit the questionmark and get
kers, or drs, active suspension, etc

What next? down to Halfords for a dump valve and some neons?
Maybe a 'flamer kit' for the exhaust and Nos.

Pathetic, the cars sound rubbish, you can really hear how bad when you get just one car on track.

These half measures are embarrassing.

I really don't get it. This year has been very interesting so far. Some very close racing with some surprises. And despite the domination of Mercedes it's not really a problem since the two team mates have been so close to make it interesting. Everyone complains about the old stuff being better (engines, sparks etc) and yet when stuff is done they start complaining because it's not done for a purpose.
