Perhaps I misheard, but I think I heard it said it was 30 million, but I am not sure which currency it is.

It's not just the paying for JB, it's the money that KM brings with him that needs replacing too (££££).
I didnt think Magnussen brought that much, if anything? He's a McLaren development driver.
As carinaman says...its big money apparently.

Officially all that's been announced is that Alonso is leaving Ferrari, and Vettel has joined Ferrari. McLaren have not announced their driver line up and won't until at least December 1st.

Anything in addition to the above is speculation at the moment.

And yet...Ron Dennis, one of the most successful men in F1, with an infinitely more informed opinion on the matter than every single person on this thread, still can't seem to decide between a chump and Jenson Button.

Strange that, isn't it?
Your missing the point.

A chump who brings 30m to the team

Or

A driver who consistently outperforms his chump team mate.

The same driver who many on this very forum said would 'get destroyed' by Hamilton, and that the Chump would walk in and kick his arse.

Just remind me again how many of this happened?

It's all a pisstake, KMag has been a disappointment, will make someone a fine midpack driver in a force India/lotus etc but simply isn't good enough for a team like McLaren (if they find their way) need drivers who have proven to be at the front.

As for all the fuss about the shameless self promoted 'driving God' that is Fred, all I've got to say on the matter is.

The last 2 ferraris have been COMPLETELY built around him, with all of the prancing donkeys resources poured in to help his cause.

And what do they have to show for it?

Nothing!

Consistently his team mates from the past have sai his driving style is awkward, and that when cars are built around him they are undriveable for anyone else, he couldn't get on with the McMerc as it was built for general drivers, as was the first Ferrari, if/when he goes to McLaren all he is going to do is blame the car, lead them up the garden path with development, fall out with the team then leave quoting himself saying the car is the problem and he drove the car to 130 million percent of its abilitys, all the while the BBC F1 team laying down a red carpet for him before pronouncing him the greatest driver of all time rofl

Dunce question. Why is Alonso called Fred?

Is it because that is the short version of the translation of Fernando?

Or as I like to think

Because he looks like Fred Flintstone?

The difference in prize fund between the the top places is tens of mill, the current 50 points between them could make that difference by itself. A team running play2play drivers is not serious about taking wins and titles IMO.

How do you know how "informed on the matter" every single person on this thread is?

People come from all kinds of backgrounds, how can you know how informed every single person is?

Back to back interviews on Sky with JB (pre-recorded) and Ron Dennis - JB says decision already taken, just no announcement made. RD says decision still not made.

Going by JB's demeanour in the interview and all weekend so far, plus all his family being there, I'd say this has to be his last GP.

Just watched the BBC's tribute to Button on their qualifying show DC and Jenson hugging it out at the end, looked like a fairwell to F1 to me.Get in that Porsche with Webber Jenson, step up to some proper racing.

Magnussen just isn't improving. He's had a full season in F1 and the gap between him and JB hasn't closed. He's still about 2 to 3 places behind his team-mate on average. Those aren't stats that support the view that he's going to be a proven race winner in a few years time. He's looking like the next Heikki.

If you take Australia out of it, Magnussen has finished higher than 7th once. Jenson's done it 8 times. The more I look at it, the more keeping KM on seems like the wrong choice.

Porsche are full next year. This isn't going to be like Audi in F1 is it, where the team say 'it categorically ain't happening' only for the fans to ignore it because it doesn't fit in with the gossip?

I haven't always been a fan of JB but I have to admit that looking back over his F1 career, it's easy to understand why he hd such a strong following. I lost a bit of interest for a few years and probably missed the spell where he really matured.

I now agree, he'll be a loss to the sport (but I'm not sure it's a certainty yet)

This is why I suspect it may be an Alonso-Vandorne pairing.

Great interview with JB on Sky, will really miss a personality like that if he goes (loved the bit about the Park Inn notepad in a £23k suite).

Here's hoping Ricciardo will go someway to filling that void.

I hate myself for saying this, but Seb? I always thought him and Jenson shared the same dry, sarcastic humour. Seems to be the only other guy in press conferences who kids around with the interviewers and comes out with snappy one-liners.

Noticed a couple of things in the Sky qually programme today.

Apparently Eric B thinks that JB isnt inherently fast enough for the seat.

Loved it when Ted K, interviewing EB after qually, pressed home the point that JB had comprehensively outqualified KM. Eb looked pretty embarrassed and didn't know what to say, breaking into a "Oh feck, what do I say here", moment.

Well done TK. smile

Edited to add:

When MB interviewed Ron, I thought RD came accross as a complete twaaart. I appreciate he has a reputation of being straight and honest, but there was no need to come across quite the way he did. he needs a couple of weeks back on the spanners for a reality check.
