I quite enjoy the LH vs NR battle, sure it would be better if other teams were involved but we still have 2 drivers competing for the championship which is more than if some other teams were dominating, as they have in previous years.

Something of a tour de force.

It wasn't as if NR wasn't pushing it either.

LH's lack of time on the track must tell, surely. If NR can't outqualify him then his confidence will take a big nock.

The Williams look good as well. So let's hope for what we hoped for in Oz: a battle for 3rd.
Nico didn't really get into his stride re: qualifying until his Monaco 'pole' ...up until that point it was all Lewis (but we all know how much that affected LH)

But I've got a horrible feeling that Lewis will take the majority of poles too this year ...& will walk the title

What may well develop is Lewis cleaning up but driver finishing second will change, I this Rosberg is quick but not a racer in the league of others around him, a Massa type driver if you may.

That would basically give Lewis the title by mid season as his lead would grow quickly.

Rosberg may well regret his wanting ferrari to catch up, it could end up costing him much more than hamilton

I agree. I think Lewis will get more wins this year than last, and will have better reliability. I think both titles will be wrapped up quite early this year.

Yep, very early stages yet but looks like it will be a walk over for Hamilton..... Nico has shot his bolt

I do hope I'm wrong and of course it's only the second race of the season, but I don't think there will be much of a battle this year. Rosberg is going to need seriously good luck to take the fight to Hamilton it seems, either that or he finds some extra talent somewhere.

How much do people think Ferrari are actually in with a shout?

Lots of people seem to be talking them up, but is it just to try and keep people interested or are they genuine?

I can't see it personally, I think the odd circuit might have them closer than normal, but think Merc are still 1 sec a lap faster on average.

I think they will get 2 wins this season. The Mercs are not bullet proof. One win on performance, one on breakdown.

Vettel must be pretty happy with his switch, the car is looking best of the rest.

McL are not far off 3 seconds a lap slower! Yikes
Alonso will be crying himself to sleep tonight.
I wonder if he has a (performance related) get out clause in his contract?

Alonso says

They have made big gains since the year start... not sure if having an exit clause is any use when the other desirable seats are all taken...
They seem at least to be able to do a race distance and have cut 1.5 secs from the deficit.

If they can get to Europe with some consistent finishes I think they will be happy. Early days.

Not a bad showing from Manor considering how far behind they are with development

Interesting practise sessions (thanks iPlayer for letting me sleep!). I think Ferrari have made some really nice gains but when it comes to race they'll struggle to keep up with the mercs.

Despite some reliability issues for Lewis, I think he's got the pace around the track - however on a single lap Vettel, Kimi and Nico aren't far behind.

Should be a good race, less so far the #1 but more for #2-#4 slots, seeing how Sauber and Lotus play. Also the battle between Alonso and Button at the back.

To echo the other points made, that honda sounds god awful.

A shout of what? Winning? No chance if both the Mercs finish without issues. Serious chance of a podium I would have thought, but it depends if they have been showboating in practice again with light fuel loads.

Positive signs are the car is clearly more driveable and both drivers look on it... but ultimately still thick end of 1 sec a lap slower than Merc on the longer runs.

Just a smidge over a tenth between Alonso and Button. I'm fascinated to see how the gap continues.

Button finished 11th and last in the season-opening Australian GP and has called for patience as McLaren re-adapt to life with Honda. But the Englishman is now hopeful that they can catch the back of the midfield pack this weekend.

“We seem a little bit more competitive than in the last race compared to the other cars,” said Button. “I might have been wrong yesterday when I said we wouldn’t race other cars. There might be that possibility and that would be a massive step forward.”
I think that's because Manor have now turned a wheel.

Though there was some comment in FP that the chase and low level grip wasn't looking good. Hopefully for them it is due to engine mapping and drivability rather than a rubbish chassis as well...

I think its far too early to assume Hamilton has it in the bag and Nico is a spent force. Look at last year, Nico managed to get some traction and was quite formidable, he also did not give up and kept trying - to assume that he's run one GP and the Friday at another and has therefore given up on the season is naive imho.

I do think Lewis is the better driver as a whole, but its not like Nico is miles behind is it, he can certainly hold his own.

This is all before reliability comes in to play too.

With regards to Ferrari I don't think we will see any big jumps in performance but they clearly have a good car out of the box and I think will creep closer to Merc through the year, probably battling with Williams for 2nd place honours. Would not rule out a race win.

Far as Renault go it would be quite amusing to see Horner demoted to a customer, it should stop him trying to throw his weight around anyway.

I wonder what RB are doing behind the scenes - approaching other manufacturers ? BMW ? Toyota ? both companies who bit off more than they could chew in F1 previously by running teams, but have decent engineering and could make a good F1 engine?

Nico was handed a nice start to the season last year, hard to know how it would have gone had Lewis not spent a lot of time playing catch-up. If unreliability isn't a factor or is fairly even-handed this year I think we'll be looking at Lewis 3 x WDC. F1 is all about tiny margins and I agree with you that Lewis is just a little better than Nico.

I totally agree that Nico won't give up - I thin we'll see a 2:1 win ratio in Lewis' favour if both are equally reliable and no other teams manage to beat them on raw pace.

Nico won't give up as such, but let's face it, in Aus Lewis was nearly half a second up on him and it showed, and with all due respect to Nico, Lewis had the world's collection of problems in FP1 and FP2, then wombles out onto the track and punches in a nearly half a second faster lap?!?! That has got to be gutting for everyone else to see. Obviously we will see tomorrow as it counts in Quali more than FP..

So far it seems Lewis has at least 1/3 a second a lap on Nico. And Nico seems to be running in Ferrari pace, which will make life very interesting indeed.

I am also saddened (but not shocked) to see Alonso going faster than Button.

With a bit of rain and the tyre degradation, this is going to be one very interesting race...

I'm actually quite excited to see this race. Would be nice to see if it will be as hot as today, then tyre deg should come in to play and Ferrari (esp. Kimi) is looking good there. Rain is forecast so, it should mix it up a little bit too. smile
