So the FIA intend to tender for a standard engine which will mean you could never have the situation of a team not being able to race due to non-supply from a works team. My understanding is that the FIA engine won't be hybrid. Toto Wolf is not happy about this because they have spent millions on an engine. What did he expect if they weren't going to supply RedBull?!

I think a team would prefer to have a hybrid engine because of the power delivery, but wouldn't it be good if they brought back a screaming V10 wink The BoP on this is going to be hard to calculate, I don't think BHP alone can determine if it's equal.

This is the end of F1 as we know it. That's if it goes ahead of course.

A team has an engine, dumps it, and then complains that it hasn't got a replacement and the whole ethos of F1 is suddenly up for grabs. One wonders if this happened to a team that didn't have the money of RB whether anyone would care.

It's pretty obvious that Bernie is just announcing this to try and put pressure on Merc to supply Red Bull.

Not sure where they would get a suitable engine from in time for next season anyway.

I'm not sure how true it is but apparently Cosworth are in the process of already putting something together for 2017

Apparently not quite obvious enough for many people.

The OP stated that it was the FIA which is pushing for this, not Ecclestone.

The FIA are a governing body, I'd be surprised if they were 'pushing for' alternative engines and comissioning their development. Standard Bernie posturing, this time with Jean Toad on side too.

According to Ecclestone's PR website, http://www.pitpass.com/55006/FIA-to-tender-for-ind... there will be an announcement on Monday.

Ecclestone with his unique view on the world of F1, stated there there was a dual formula F1 in the past, with turbo and normally aspirated engines, suggesting it was a 'choice'. Fantasy F1 by Ecclestone.

My understanding of the concord agreement is that such a move requires the agreement of the main teams.

This could be farcical.

Are they suggesting that talks are already underway? So not tendering?

The FIA are offering the tender, not Mr E. As commercial rights holder, he doesn't have the full power to do this. If it is his idea then the FIA would have to make it happen with agreement of the teams.

What will happen is that the announcement will be different to what Ecclestone is saying and this will be seen as a positive, rather than just less of a disaster.

That's if he's up to his normal tricks.

I thought such changes only required a majority from the strategy group, from which FIA and FOM carry a majority?

That said, I think it is just power games to encourage Renault et al (well, basically just Renault) to supply RB.

Not being able to race due to non supply of engine? I didn't know anyone had ever had that situation. Red bull might not have an engine, but only due to them refusing the one on offer. Is it me or are Red Bull becoming the new Ferrari when it comes to trying to bully everyone when they don't get their way.

For me, F1 has always been primarily a technical competition between teams, engine suppliers and (until recently) tyre suppliers; I really couldn't really care less about the driver's championship. If people want to watch drivers in equally matched cars racing against each other there's plenty of series that offer that. If teams don't want to be involved in a sport where a poor engineering decision puts them at the back of the grid, they should go and race in a spec series.

The thing that irks me about this story is that Max Mosley's name keeps cropping up. I thought we'd seen the back of him.

Next they'll be telling us Flavio has bought Cosworth.

What they need is "the loaner" (a la The Mask), a smokey old bint of an engine that you must use if you find yourself stuck up st creek without an engine.

How about becoming the test bed for all future ideas, no matter how insane? "Hummm, you won't accept what is on offer, here, have a 1.1 rotatory turbo diesel with plug in electric hybrid". It can work like the back up cars on Top Gear. Make the alternative to sorting out the problems so horrific they find a way.
