I know it won't happen but now Mercedes have sealed the constructor's championship and Hamilton has secured his third title why wouldn't Wolff swap Hamilton out for the remainder of the season and give Pascal Wehrlein a run now the DTM season has finished? He has stated he would like to help him into F1 and if nothing else it would be a nice reward for winning the DTM.

Because Lewis will want to add to his tally of race wins and further rub Nico's nose in it. He has also never won in Brazil, something a Senna fan like him will want to put right.

with lack of testing, I think it's a very good idea.

Why not Rosberg? He's statistically less likely to score points

I guess there is no reason not to, but it won't happen. Although I would love to see Nico's reaction to Hamilton taking a break. Basically saying "I'm quitting the championship 3 races early. I don't even need all the races to win", however I suspect it would annoy sponsors and fans too much.

Imagine if Wehrlein beat Rosberg...

To be honest I think it would be brilliant if Pascal came in and showed Nico up, even better if Hamilton acted as Pascal's driver coach for the races. Hamilton would still attend the races and do more media stuff so that would keep the sponsors happy but the point EagleMoto4-2 raised that he's never won the Brazilian GP means I think he would/should take place in that race to set that record straight.

laugh
It's like the annoying kid at school who always used to stand up and leave an exam half an hour before the allotted time, not because he was thick and couldn't answer anymore, but because he just didn't need as long as everybody else. I hated him!! smile

It won't happen of course but it's an interesting idea. Has this sort of thing ever happened before?

I don't think a champion has ever stepped aside but teams have swapped drivers out mid season plenty of times for other reasons, Manor are doing it race by race with Rossi & Merhi just now.

Why would Mercedes want to pay Lewis millions to sit on the sidelines, or coach another driver??

Why would Lewis want to give up the F1 seat he's worked hard for, for even a couple of races? Championship or not, you're always learning, always improving.

As mentioned, you'd statistically be better replacing Rosberg, but try putting that one over on him and see what the reaction is. I guarantee he'd throw more than a baseball cap at you.

That is a somewhat different thing to a champion giving up their seat before the end of a season.

The closest example I can think of is a sad one: Jochen Rindt died in practice for the 1970 Italian Grand Prix, with 3 GPs stil to go, and still won the championship posthumously.

Well Rosberg wouldn't be happy but neither would Hamilton, would he? Mind you it might put them both in some sort of perspective, though I don't think so.

There is a reason why he is champion and it is not because he sells his seat when the job has been completed. I guess now he can use the rest of the races as practice or to accumulate as many points as he can. The drivers get paid per championship point.

Kimi was on such a high bonus with Renault at one stage he was fighting hard to ensure that he the got the car to the end. Think he completed every lap of every race (except one were he got lapped getting lost on one of the tracks IIRC).

Just when everyone is complaining about the state of F1, someone comes along with the idea of not having it's biggest star participate. Brilliant!

Might be nice to let him have some FP time.
