Of course the only issue with everyone buying a Now TV pass for today is that it will encourage Sky to limit what Channel 4 can show and when next year!

Seriously

You would buy a pass to watch an F1 race? Because a bloke who wins routinely struggled to finish 5th!

Good business is where you find it.

No, we were watching Lewis become WDC. No idea why we'd be watching Bottas!

I think maybe F1 are maybe not interested in transient viewers ?

Only viewers who understand the season as a whole ?

Just for info, he didn’t struggle to finish 5th, he finished 4th and had everything turned down as it was an comfortable 4th. He might have struggled to get 3rd but then why would he try when the WDC was already won with two races to spare ?

It’s been a good season for those interested in F1. Just look how long the threads are this season here after a race.

Not everyone agrees but there’s plenty to discuss.

I didn't fancy staying up until 23.00 to watch the C4 coverage so I bit the bullet and bought a NowTV pass last night.

I am pleased I did but David Croft really is awful, I much prefer Ben Edwards. Brundle is excellent so makes up for it.

I bought the pass too, as I did not want to stay up till 23:00 when I'd started work at 07:00!

Enjoyed Brundle again. Didn't find Paul di Resta as miserable as he was when he actually drove F1. I also did not like David Croft.
I enjoyed the Damon Hill piece where he drove his father's Lotus.

Overall, I found myself missing the C4 team.

Yes, agreed on the Damon/Graham Hill piece. That was good.

Somehow I managed to get all the way from yesterday evening to tonight without being told the result by anyone biggrin

Not that it was a surprise Lewis won, but pleased none the less to sit down and watch the recorded highlights from last night

(on a side note, "highlights" seems to be a misnomer. It's 95% of the race in my guess. Same for qualifying. I wonder if there's a percentage they have to hit?

I sat and watched the C4 highlights last night too, even though I knew the result.

I'd guess at it being much less than 95%, probably somewhere closer to 75%. Either way I think I prefer the highlights in a way, especially if you can avoid the result, someone else sifting through it and cutting out the boring bits and just giving you the interesting stuff cant be a bad thing.

You do have to watch the lap numbers a bit closer though so as to know when it's skipped a few!

I wonder do they have to take the video footage supplied by F1 and make purely linear cuts to work it down to a target amount or are they allowed to edit in their own 'replays' (from the supplied footage) which don't count against the overall percentage of the race shown but do bulk out the length of the race coverage a bit?

Frankly, for most races the edited highlights are preferable. It's rare to see a race that is continuously thrilling from start to finish and as long as it's aired reasonably soon after the live race and you don't find out the results, happy days, Nice to watch it in the evening too, if you have something that needs doing in the afternoon.

I'm also a convert to evening highlights of European races. Means that F1 doesn't encroach into my weekends anywhere near as much.

Agree, and I'll be doing that from next season as I've ditched Sky. The frustrating thing is the timing of the Americas highlights, as they are often some of the best races (Canada, US, Brazil) and 3 of them come at the important end of the championship. Not much can be done about that apart from a very late night.

Agree that highlights are often just as good as the race.

I remember this year recording the entire Canadian Grand Prix as I was out, then getting up at half six to watch it before work on the Monday. I was at work by seven.

I remember a few seasons back that I'd even start the highlights show recording on a PVR and then start watching it half an hour later so I could ffwd through the boring bits - I frequently 'caught up' with the broadcast.

Luckily, things have improved in the last year or two.

At the end of the coverage last night it showed the Melbourne Quali and race highlights dates as the 16/17 March. So seems to confirm c4 are going to be allowed to have same day highlights much the same as before.

Was slightly worried it would get relegated to a Monday/Tuesday night like other sports highlights.

Also stating "Australian Grand Prix 2019, highlights on Channel 4, 16th/17th March 2019" on the C4 F1 website. Likewise, I was concerned that the highlight package would be a day or two after the race.

It will still be the same day, but the the gap between the race finishing and the highlights being shown has extended.

"One of the restrictions imposed on them concerned the scheduling of the highlights. The 2012 to 2018 contract stipulated that the gap between the race ending and the highlights edit starting must be equal to, or greater than, two hours. For 2019’s new deal, following a request from Sky, that gap is extending to three hours, meaning that Channel 4’s highlights edit for European rounds cannot start until around 18:55 UK time."

Brazil and USA etc. will be past my bedtime!!

Also says the highlights will be 7 mins shorter.
