C4 restrictions imposed by Sky for the 2019 season:

- A maximum of 50% of the C4 show runtime can feature on track coverage. That is, to show an hour of the race they need to fill another hour of pre-race coverage and post race analysis.

- They are not allowed in the pen, all interviews will be supplied by Sky. Paddock interviews will also be limited with no access to the pit lane during the race.

- No grid walks (apart from Silverstone)

- Highlights show must not start until 3 hours after the race.

The 50% rule coupled with the significant Paddock restrictions is brutal and will mean lengthy pre and post race chat amongst the presenting team if they want reasonable race highlights. Clever move from Sky.

Sky are also putting this weekend on Sky 1 and possibly the first three races.

That's pure ste....

Lee's interviews with some of the drivers in the pen are the best. I don't really understand how Sky can limit interviews? Surely anyone with the proper media credentials can carry out interviews in the paddock and pen?

So really, the C4 show is now just an advert for sky. You watch it, you question why you can't see the full race, see it live, and why the presenters aren't on the grid or able to talk to... Anyone.

And if you want more of what you're used to getting, you look into what's happened and you realise your only option is to pay sky for a proper show..

So sky have basically allowed C4 to pay for a level of access so basic, that all it can really do is make some viewers finally give in and pay for sky. And those that don't/can't, are stuck either missing out on half the sport, or just giving up altogether.

Clever move indeed.

After reading the above "rules", I'll watch Australia highlights and turn off for good if I don't like what I see.

According to the BBC the track/chat ratio was around 70/30 last year, so 50/50 is a big change.

Can’t wait till the UK can get free from Bernie’s last stand sky deal and get F1tv like the rest of the world.

Simply put don't watch ANY of it.

The less people pay and watch the figures drop, C4 will not bid for it.

If you must watch it try dodgy streams, they are fine for most things. Tv has gone pay, not because it is needed, or it is necessary but because the rights holders have sold it to the highest bidder, who then wants to recoup that money by selling it you for immense profits to fund among other things, football, boxing PPV investment, and numerous other sports.

If you are happy to basically fund a sport run, owned and governed by billionaires who could happily show it free but wont, fair enough. But be aware of the precedent you are setting, and be aware you are a little bit selfish. Fair enough it's your money, live your life,l it's all about you after all, isnt that what the modern world is all about. Lol

But in all honesty watch other things, most people watch F1 out of habit and as soon as they stop they realise, WTF was I spending hours watching this crap for anyway.

There is logic there, albeit I think sky must calculate that enough people are willing to pay for the current setup to be the best way to make money. I don't believe a serious number of people will give up their sport to make a stand against the actions of a large corporation.

But assuming you follow your own logic.. does that mean you no longer watch any of it and have since lost interest entirely? You're obviously still active on this F1 forum which seems at odds with zero interest.

Or just watch the official highlights reel on the F1 youtube channel. Those 6 minute films were more than enough for some of the races last year.

Posting on a forum doesn't mean you have to be interested enough to watch it on tv.

Yet here you are, seeked our a thread on a forum of a sport you think is crap, a waste of time and ranted about it... is this one of the other things you’ve found to do? wink

Chunder said that most people who stop watching realise F1 was a waste of time anyway.

If you're not watch and then subsequently lose interest, that would be the end of most peoples time spent reading and posting on forums about it.

Not an unreasonable question imo.

Maybe when you stop watching, losing interest is just step one... Followed up later on by developing an active hatred of the sport?

Tbh, I'm increasingly finding that the actual racing is the least interesting part of F1. Most races end up being a big anticlimax after all the hype and build up. All the behind the scenes political and technical stuff is more interesting, and that's the stuff you can read about on forums and specialist magazines and websites.

i get where he's coming from though. i wonder how F1 will pull back from this or if it goes the way of boxing, which used to be mainstream when FTA but is now a footnote in the news with 98% of population uninterested. F1 is in a bit of a perfect storm:
- processional races
- too little competition (only 3 teams winning for last 7 years?)
- boring new tracks
- declining audiences
- minimal coverage in mainstream press compared to 20 years ago
- combined with less FTA not feeding in new audiences

there's huge intrigue with SB & LH, great new talent emerging and geeky interest in the technology but that's not enough to overcome the hurdles for a new audience. a lot of it is the beast that Bernie built, and maybe time is up.
i'm the old audience, so retain a fascination for the circus. i'm not sure why a young person not brought up watching it with the family on the sofa would pay to stream races from the new circuits.

I've always felt the way to an extent. It's more about the anticipation in many ways. I look forward to each race based on it being the next chapter and potential new problems for each team, and of course then it's back hype and speculation. It's watching the planning, politics and gambles of multi million companies in a televised battle to try and out compete one another.

I think it's also rewarding in as much as the more you dig into the detail, the more passionate you become about how a season can, and does play out. I suppose at the end of the day it's one of those things that requires some effort to get the most out of it. This season, Williams are something of facsination, and I don't expect them to do anything remotely worth watching on track!

And of course.. not all races are tedious. Some are almost unbelievable.
