Tyre strategy is never irrelevant, if it's wet it'll just be about wets, inters, the brave move to slicks

That lap from Ricciardo.... reminds me of a Hakkinen special back in the day... seemingly finding extra speed from out of nowhere.

I wonder if fuel pressure problem is F1 speak for no fuel in the tank!

Fragibility rofl

I think Ted made up some new phrases when he interviewed Toto as well

There is such a thing as frangibility, but can't see what the car breaking into fragments would have to do with the fuel.

Of course, I forgot to mention the word 'dry' tyre strategy.

Mega lap from Ricciardo. Very pleased for him. Hamilton was also looking good but Ric was mega in S3.

Great performance from Hulk too, splitting the Ferraris.

Rain tomorrow might throw a spanner in the works for Red Bull's strategy on the Super Softs. I honestly don't think the grip levels on the Super Soft vs Ultra Soft off the line will make much of a difference. Ricciardo to win the race!

Alonso has dragged the McLaren in to Q3. Nice to see, but no magic chassis here, which is not good to see.

Trying to think of a way Hamilton can win this now and can only come up with pit stop strategy... Of which Nico will have first call unless he & DR have a collision, Safety Car or attrition.

Lewis just did an interview basically saying there is 0 chance into turn one and no chance to over take. Rain probably the only chance for an interesting race.

Riccardo winning and Verstappen with something to prove from the back of the grid will probably be excitement enough for me

^ I think Verstappen may start to wonder if this move to RBR has come half a season too early. DR is the form driver on the grid, I wonder if it is just a bit too soon for Max and may dent his confidence if he can't match DR for pace. OK Ferrari are slower but I dare say he would fancy his chances up against Seb more than DR at the moment.

Both were looking 10/10's, hamilton seemed to lose it in S3, I wonder if it was just ric/RB being better there, or if hamilton made an error, or his tyres were showing their age after his unusual several warmup lamp strat.

I think he looked genuinely unhappy with his lot. In all honesty, if the only thing that satisfies him is having a car that allows him to win every qualification, race and championship, he should think about taking a break from things and finding something that can make him happy.

I'm not sure that's it, perhaps it's the knowledge that he can and the car can, but so often doesn't due to reliability- while Rosberg appears 'luckier' this season.

Ricciardo can go long but will that help him? If he can gallop away and wait until everyone else has stopped and then come out in the lead, then yes, it will. But that isn't going to happen. If there's a safety car early on, will be be able to get the Ultras to take him to the end?

If there's no safety car, you want to be first to stop who can then come out and not hit a trail of cars who haven't stopped yet. Merc will be looking for the gap from lap 10 onwards and I think we an expect some stops we'll before lap 20. Someone could be prepared to run 50 laps though, in the hope of a safety car. If you get your stop done early then you really don't want to be trapped behind them for 30 laps ...

It's not a race for the overtaking show, but unless Mercs jump Ricciardo off the start, it could be fascinating.

Somewhat of a generalisation, he has beaten the guy in the other car on merit for the past two seasons.. but if Mercedes don't give him the equipment to compete on equal terms do you expect him to be doing cartwheels of joy?

Surely someone like Hamilton must have been here many a time in his career by now, though. Look at all those wilderness years he spent with McLaren. There probably isn't a driver on the grid, apart from Rosberg, who wouldn't swap places with him.

Maybe the good years have ruined his perspective or the hedonism is wearing thin and racing is starting to feel like work.

Er no. His championship winning car didn't work properly yet again and messed him up when he needed it most. Hence glum driver.
What fairy tale berk would act any other way in the circs? Certainly not an F1 driver.

Schumacher was normally pretty calm and pragmatic IIRC, as was Hakkinen.
