I wonder how many here would never slip up if they were being regularly interviewed live on radio/TV? I suspect none, but then we'll never know as no one posting here with nothing better to do than slag off a talented sportsman who is living the dream through innate talent and good opportunities, but also through hard work and dedication is ever going to amount to much frankly!

Please tell me where he’s sprouted slum nonsense ...I can’t recall any time he’s used those words before.

I do recall him saying he lived in a council house on his dads sofa while he worked his butt off for him.

Be nice if you could back up your statement with evidence
He's been slagging off Stevenage for years and it started with "not a nice place".

Not sure why he's so critical of his upbringing. Maybe he'd like to project a background similar to some of his US rapper friends who grew up in genuine ghettos ?

Maybe we'll also hear from Vettel how rough it was for him, growing up with only one Steinway in his wooden shack
He's never criticised his upbringing... he's always praised how much his dad for him and how close they are as a family.

Guffaw.
Yes, to my 9 year old, Lewis is a hero.

That’s what Hamilton was/is accused of, IIRC.
No he’s not accused of evading tax

He isn't breaking any laws and is doing no more than anyone else in his position would do.

I imagine what is being referred to is The Panorama Paradise Papers piece. Hamilton wasn't accused of anything. It highlighted how he was legally able to AVOID Tax against he jet. He will have top accountants and advisers looking after his money, as we all would in his position. People in his position exploit the rules just as much as designers exploit the rules in F1.
If he had evaded tax the case would've been built against him already

Hamilton was never accused of tax evasion. Where has that come from?? He used a legal tax avoidance scheme, upon the advice of his tax advisors...

People try hard to get dirt on these celebs like it’ll boost their own, slightly pitiful, existence. When my accountant tells me, you can do such and such to save X amount on tax. I listen to him and then follow the instructions. Why? Because I’m not an idiot. Some people need to have a word with themselves and try to understand why it is they need to pin something on someone they’ll never meet and who couldn’t give two hoots about them.

Hamilton gets lambasted for living abroad and paying less tax; when Button and half the grid do the same. Very very odd. Remember also, most drivers will genuinely be out of their ‘home’ country for much of the year; and so why not get stationed in Monaco or Switzerland? It makes perfect sense.

You are correct, he has criticised his town environment, not his family upbringing.

I have to ask, in general rather than you specifically, but isn't it okay to not like the place you were bought up? I don't like the area I was bought up in and I moved away. I would describe it myself as 'not a nice place'. That's my opinion and one I have a right to have and express. Hamilton is the same. Everyone is the same.

Again, I don't recall him being particularly disparaging about the place so don't understand what people are banging on about the 'constantly', but the guy has the right to that view and that opinion - he was bought up there! Could he have picked his words more carefully knowing the scrutiny? Maybe, but everyone needs to ask themselves - what if Kimi had called somewhere a st hole? We'd have all laughed and said 'oh what a character, isn't it nice that he speaks his mind and says what he wants'.

I think we're all being hypocritical and selective with whatever rules we are applying to who can say what and how.

Some of the public and media criticise Bono for what he says. Rightly or wrongly when you have a public platform careful choice of one's words is the prudent approach.

+1. See also Corbyn and the Stupid Woman row. Who gives a st, and who hasn't done similar.

I've lived in stholes and have referred to them as such, however I also take the hump when people who haven't lived there are disparaging of areas that I grew up in.

That's not because I'm a raging hypocrite, but because I'm a normal human being.

See also: having a tough upbringing/ success being due to hard work, not good fortune, and any of the other million things we tell ourelves about ourselves.

Fair enough he cocked up, but it doesnt help his image, which is split to say the least.
That's a fair call.
No doubting his ability behind the wheel of an F1 car.
The content of his character however seems to be a bit marmite with the masses ala Chris Evans or Piers Morgan

I grew up largely in the forest of dean. Technically - an area of outstanding natural beauty, and some where I've brought my wife to enjoy and experience, but (particularly as a non native), a place I've referred to often as a sthole to grow up in.

But hey, (Lewis said something), wahhhhhhhh

Haha I couldn't give st what Corbyn apart from he's lying through his teeth to get himself out of the st!!!
Hamilton has held his hands up, apologised for what he said and isn't what he meant.

Yes he was brought up in a place which isn't the nicest, his family was poor, his dad held 3jobs to help his son and he's made the most of the help he's been given.
He's worked his arse off and know is bearing the fruits of his and dad's hard work. Nobody has put on a plate for him, so get of his back he deserves all he gets!!!!

The guy is a living legendbow

I just think he’s not very bright. And I say that as a Hamilton fan - I like him. I think he’s just a bit David beckham etc not the sharpest tool in the box. He has said a number of things that are a bit off yet I really don’t think he has any malice in him at all. Eg he mixed up something in the back room after a race recently I noticed. And his pic of a pig in a dumpster etc proving meat is murder. It just shows he’s not too bright
Who, by your reckoning are the 'bright' F1 drivers then?

Because was does a pig in a dumpster have to do with the rearing of meat for human consumption?

I know he’s exceptionally bright and gifted at racing and all things related. That doesn’t mean he’s the brightest with language. He often chooses the wrong words / sayings etc ie I don’t think he would have meant to have said slums, but that’s what came out.
He, like at least half the grid, is probably "somewhere on the spectrum" as they say, it's quite common in very high achievers.
