Stevenage boss Dino Maamria issues public invitation to Lewis Hamilton to attend a Boro game after F1 star’s ‘slums’ slur

Stevenage boss Dino Maamria has issued a public invitation to Lewis Hamilton to attend a home game at the Lamex as a way of showing solidarity with his hometown after the Formula 1 World Champion’s ill-advised comments this week.
Formula 1 racing driver Lewis Hamilton came under fire for describing his hometown of Stevenage as ‘the slums’ during a speech at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year show on Sunday.
The five-time F1 world champion was speaking on stage after being announced as one of the six finalists for the award.
Reflecting on his career so far and his chances of overtaking Michael Schumacher as the most successful racing driver of all-time, Hamilton said to co-presenter Gabby Logan: “It really was a dream for us all as a family to do something different. For us to get out of the slums.”
Hamilton quickly corrected himself by saying: “Well, not the slums, but to get out of somewhere and do something.
“We all set our goals very, very high.”
However Boro boss Maamria showed sympathy for the star.
Speaking at the club’s training ground Bragbury End on Thursday afternoon the charismatic 46-year-old said: “I was surprised by the choice of words but I think his intention was better than that. I think his intention was that nothing is impossible and he’s made his way to the top.
“But using the word slum I think he regretted that and apologised for that I think as a town we’re far from that, we’re proud of the town, proud of the football club. This town brought in not just Lewis Hamilton but a lot of good people I think there are artists from Stevenage, there’s popstars from Stevenage, there’s Premier League players from Stevenage, so this town produced a lot of good people, a lot of celebrities that’s what I think is possible for the young generation of Stevenage, that’s what I read from it.
Hamilton’s ill-judged comment created a social media frenzy, with many from the town incensed at his derogatory words.
Sharon Taylor, leader of Stevenage Borough Council, tweeted: “Disappointing that @LewisHamilton chose to use this event to make negative comments about his home town. Nowhere is perfect but we’ll go high and say we are #ProudofStevenage.”
Stevenage was designated the UK’s first New Town in 1946. Devised as a radical solution to London’s post-war housing crisis, it now has a population of about 90,000.
Footballer Ashley Young, golfer Ian Poulter and actor Leslie Phillips also hail from the town.
Maamria was quick to praise the 33-year-old F1 star adding that his wife and her family are good friends with the Hamilton’s.
He added: “I don’t think we should be too harsh on Lewis Hamilton, we should be proud of him and of what he’s achieved and I think if there’s one thing on Lewis Hamilton is that he comes from a good grounded family,
“I think it was out of character for him to say that so if he’s listening I want to tell him that I want him to come to the Lamex and support us for one of our games.
“If you want to really say sorry about it comes and support us, I invite him personally.”
Tour de France winner Geraint Thomas ultimately won the SPOTY award, with Hamilton finishing in second place in the public vote.

'He's got a bloody nerve!' F1 fan who owns Lewis Hamilton's childhood home says racer has 'lost touch with reality' when he branded hometown a 'slum' (and says the property is now worth £1million)
•Trevor Lugmayer, 73 and his wife Valerie, live in star's former six-bedroom home
•Hamilton moved to their Stevenage home at 12 staying there from 1997 to 2001
•Driver, 33, had to make a groveling apology after he described town as a 'slum'

The couple who live in Lewis Hamilton's old house have hit back after he referred to it as a 'slum', saying he has lost touch with reality.
Trevor Lugmayer, 73, and his wife Valerie, 76, now own the six-bedroom house in Stevenage, Hertfordshire where the racing driver, 33, lived as a youngster.
They are among hundreds of Stevenage residents left outraged after the F1 champion spoke ill of his hometown during his speech for BBC Sports Personality of the Year.
He was forced to issue a grovelling apology after he 'chose the wrong words' to describe the sleepy suburban city he grew up in.
But the Lugmayers are still not happy, with company boss Trevor telling MailOnline: 'Stevenage is a lovely place, it's charming and its full of lovely people.
'There is no way you could describe Stevenage as a slum. I can't believe he would say that.
'Stevenage has got all the amenities you could possibly want. It's safe and peaceful.'
His wife told The Times: 'I think he's got a bloody nerve. There's no way this is a slum area, no way. I am quite upset by what he said. Stevenage is quite nice actually.'
A blue plaque honouring the young racing driver used to hang on the wall, before the couple added an extension.
The plaque read: 'Lewis Hamilton Racing Driver lived here 1997-2001.'
Mr Lugmayer, who is an F1 fan himself and has followed Hamilton's career closely, added: 'I don't know how he could describe this house as a 'slum'.
'When Hamilton lived here there were six bedrooms and four bathrooms.
'He lived here when he got his first contract with Mercedes. His dad Anthony built a garage to keep the car in. And when he made it he bought his dad the house next door.'
His wife added: 'We love living here. Our daughter and our five grandchildren live next door. It's quiet, peaceful, it's everything we want.
'Lewis Hamilton might have moved on but we are still getting post sent to him here. We got this magazine from Mercedes just the other day.
sent him a message to say that we had some post for him but he didn't reply.'
Hamilton moved into the mansion in quiet, leafy Woodfield Road when he was 12 years old.
He had previously lived in a three-bedroom council house in Peartree Way, on the other side of Stevenage.
Mr Lugmayer added to The Times: 'Most people in Stevenage were Lewis Hamilton fans, but I am not so sure now.
'He used to be an ambassador for Stevenage and everybody loved him because of that, but talk about an own goal, he's really messed up here.'

gardener, Notts UK, United Kingdom, in the comments section ALSO agrees with you;
"Hamilton speaks like he is from a slum sometimes. More importantly - what the hell has he done to his hair."

do you just trawl the internet digging up ste like this. Think you need a girlfriend, unless you’re married and have nothing better to do [b]Stevenage boss Dino Maamria issues public invitation to Lewis Hamilton to attend a Boro game .....BLAH BLAH BLAH
The whole thing has been blown out of all proportion really. Of course he should have said it in the first place but the fact the he corrected himself straightaway has been ignored, like it was never said. Slum makes a better headline, more mileage in that. It’s kept going for 5 days here... I doubt there’s anyone here who hasn’t said something that came out wrong, chose the wrong word etc.
The hilarious part about this is...
Have any of you ever lived there? I know people who have lived there all their life and have no desire to live anywhere else, same as places like Luton, Dover, Telford all the same sort of dumps people criticise when all they have done is drive past, visited or the like.
I have lived in some rough places admittedly, but St Evenage, is one of the better ones. look beyond the image for Gods sake.
And you know what now? it is getting expensive, why? Coz it is in perfect location to commute, NOT on the worlds worst road the M1, god train links, central. It might not look fabulous, the town centre is awful, but beyond that, honestly you would be surprised.

Spent a good time there as a kid, I’m the same age as Lewis and it WAS a sthole. A lot can change in 20 years....Have any of you ever lived there? Driver’s driver of the year: drivers vote Hamilton number one, with Max second interestingly.
This was the first time the vote had been run by the Formula 1 bosses, with seventeen of the twenty drivers taking part.
Points were handed out based on F1’s current system, with 25 points given to the top driver on each list.

Unsurprising really. Hamilton broke down Vettel this year, not only his ability on track but his ability to keep up the intensity all year is pretty incredible. Max second, I’d go with that, outperformed his car quite a lot this year, if only he can keep in check the temper tantrums. Leclerc would be 3rd for me This was the first time the vote had been run by the Formula 1 bosses, with seventeen of the twenty drivers taking part.

If he can break down Vettel that easily, speaks volumes for what Rosberg did a few years ago in the same car, and why he didn't want to do it again!
His decision to me makes more and more sense!!
Well it’s no secret that’s why rosberg left. He openly admitted he couldn’t do it again His decision to me makes more and more sense!!

Rosberg was also a lot closer to Hamilton in the other seasons than many expected too and was very quick over one lap. I know many argue that Button did the same with Hamilton, but Hamilton at Mercedes is a much better more rounded driver than Hamilton was at the time at McLaren. Hats off to Rosberg, maybe not an all time great, but arguably the best one time WDC there has been and I say that as a Mansell fan.
