Undernourished then.

Anyway I think Lewis is probably best I’ve seen in my 45 years viewing F1. If you exclude the cheaters, then definitely (imho).

Agreed! Taking out the cheaters and nasty buggers; Hamilton is in a class of one.

Have to agree, only one I rate better ( than everyone ) is Jim Clark.

Clearly Jimmy was an extraordinary talent. I wonder though how he would have got on in wheel to wheel combat? He's before my time, but my understanding is that he tended to be at the front and driving off usually, not having to get too involved in any racing, because he was so fast!

Clark made it seem so effortless, while others around him were dying, literally.

Extraordinary talent.

Until he died, literally.

Lots of deaths were down to poor safety at the circuits and cars that fell apart. Luck of the draw played it's part too. There aren't many of that era who didn't have severe crashes.

Jim died when his car hit a tree, most likely a tyre failed, but we will never know the cause.

Probably just some good humour... He and Lewis apparently have a decent relationship.

Or maybe, it's a shot fired to let the world and Lewis know that when the Merc seat is free, he's incoming biggrin

The thing is, with tyres as fragile as they are and tens of millions spent on a tenth of a second, it's a fairly safe bet that any race winner probably doesn't have the best of tyres come the end, unless extra pit stop opportunities etc. To remain competitive and win, even the best car has to lean very heavily on the tyres and the best strategy is to use the performance they have = they will generally be ropey come the end. Albeit, Mercedes have really managed exceptionally well to conquer the duff-spec tyres in recent seasons.

Agreed.

If they weren't mates it would be exceptionally weird for a kid who's never won a single F1 point to be taking pot-shots at one of the all-time greats.

I doubt he'll be unlapping himself on Lewis, unlike Irvine did on Senna biggrin

Managed to see him at Silverstone today (from a distance https://youtu.be/UROhCClIajI ). He later launched the car out of Club with a bucket load of opposite lock. He looked like he was having an absolute blast.

Not many fans will see him driving first hand this year - good work! Or do you work at the circuit!?

Unexpectedly moved to Brackley last year, knew the test was going ahead and joined a couple of others on a roundabout next to the circuit. Great to see but shocked at how quiet the car was.

You should pitch a tent on that roundabout now to reserve a space come GP day biggrin

They are quiet, very muted - like most modern small turbo engines.. There is no edge to the sound. I remember back in 2014 how dismayed everyone was when they heard the new engines for the first time.

We went to Barcelona in 2014, I still remember how deflated everyone was by the little put put noise as they went past. Properly gutting.

In the flesh they do sound like Auntie Pauline's daily driver.
F1 is supposed to be a spectacle.
F1 is failing in this respect.

I disagree. I think they sound great. And the different manufacturers sound different. The V8 were just a high pitched noise that got tiring after a while.

At the races you can now hear so much more of what is going on. Makes for a better experience to me.
