It's bks. Typical Benson bks. Too many obstacles to make it happen
Too many obstacles that Mr E put in place....Never gonna happen.
Of course I think it's rubbish, I'm just thinking about how BE might have stopped a breakaway series in the past? Could he have bought everything that could equate to "something else" and sat on it for if the time was right?
What was BE's biggest problem owning F1, a rival series? If the teams decided to set up something else then what better position to be in than to own whatever they wanted?
Of course it's probably just rubbish

I know Benson gets the hate on PH, but Peter Windsor? Also don't shoot the messenger, he's only saying what he's been told (apparently).

I think the biggest issue preventing a rival series is would any of the current teams want to work with Bernie again? Most seem to relieved / happy he's gone looking at he comments. I'd not really paid much attention to who and what Liberty are until just now. I hadn't realised that they're behind Discovery channel (and many others).
I'm begining to see why there is this big standoff between Sky and Discovery at the moment - Discovery, and others, will not longer be broadcast on Sky from 1st Feb.
All liberty need to do is develop their own Broadband distribution box and Sky will be completely cut out.
Mind you, in ten years time satelite dishes will be as out of date as renting a VHS tape from Blockbuster.

Just stream it like Netflix & Amazon. You don't even need much capital (and interestingly Netflix uses Amazon hosting)... just PAYG and scale up/down based on demand...

Hmmm...maybe, maybe not. He was a capricious old so n so in later years, but he made a lot of them very rich

Liberty are the company behind Virgin Media in the UK. All liberty need to do is develop their own Broadband distribution box and Sky will be completely cut out.
There's a discussion along these lines brewing in the TV, Film & Radio forum.

How so? He removed the commercial aspect from the teams and pocketed it himself. You could argue he has made the teams much poorer. Who has he made very rich?He was a capricious old so n so in later years, but he made a lot of them very rich

There may be all sorts of reasons to loath sky but at least it works! I think I'd rather give up being a fan than deal with virgin medias tech assistance chimps ever again
Interesting thread. I’m 64 and stopped watching F1 just after the Alesi, Prost, Senna, Mansell era – when it all got processional (about 25 years ago?).
In my younger days you fixed & tweaked your own car and raced your mates from one pub to the next. These days people don’t know what makes cars tick and with all the congestion, speed limits, policing and “social attitude” stuff it’s very hard to get any fun out of cars & driving and even harder to make a connection between that and motor sport.
While a new set of rules making cars narrower with less downforce etc. would be great I strongly suspect that the new F1 owners will go in completely the opposite direction and it’ll be all about spectacle, social media and TV rights hosted by a bevy of airhead bimbos who know nothing about cars, technology or racing.
But, fear not! It’s being going in that direction for decades. F1 hasn’t really had much to do with motor racing for ages and, as has been pointed out, there are other formulae where real cars engage in real racing so let’s just let that curious animal that is F1 go and do its own thing.
I can’t wait for the sun to come out so I can go and have some serious fun round the B roads of Norfolk on my SXV550 – old habits you know!
