And you think they will be pushing to the max during a race for every lap? Maximum will be Qualify mode for few laps max. They aren't massively physical hence upstarts like Stroll driving them because his Dad paid 20 mil to Williams.

Not sure why Nico came out saying they will be like gladiators this year. No one is trying to engineer a car that is impossible to drive in fact the opposite...
We know what you think re: Stroll / Williams, you repeat the same sentiment in every thread

If the oil burning protestations peg Mercedes' qualifying pace back we could be in for a classic season. Ferrari and Red Bull could well have built cars which can sustain a similar race pace.

You are aware he dominated the F3 championship last year, and finished 5th at Daytona 24 hours?
Frankly I would have been shocked if he didn't dominate F3 last year with the resources he had available
Thank you.

The jury is still out on him for me.

However there is a value in simply getting the job done. Lots of drivers in history have been given that sort of advantage and not managed it.

I doubt he will set F1 alight - but I do hope he gives tommunster a reason to stop sticking the knife in with every fking post!

Especially when the payment his Dad provides is about 5% of Mercedes annual budget - hardly world beater stuff.
So 20 million is only 5% of Williams annual budget?!! Ermmm OKAY..

I read so many times on here Nico getting bashed for being born in F1 royalty etc etc, Lewis being a street kids plucked from the gutter by Ron and planted into a kart and he had some magical God gifted natural talent and speed....blah blah blah... but now i can't say anything bout Lance Stroll??

Fact is with what his Dad has chucked at him if he does anything but become an F1 WDC in the next 10 years then he has massively failed IMO.

You can buy success in Motorsport..its kinda the point if you appreciate the engineering side and not just follow the drivers on Instagram.

The issue is that you just don't stop once someone triggers you! laugh

Anyway - do we think we are seeing the ultimate Williams pace?

Have a feeling we have seen a good demo of the McLaren early season pace...

Its not that you aren't allowed to mention him dear boy, its that you don't ever stop!

Also, cool your jets chap and read my post again. 5% of MERCEDES budget.

It is a bit more meaningful 11% of Williams'

(have you looked up what F1 costs recently?)

Here, have a source.

Not definitive or the most current but it gives us a solid idea

However, your assertion that Daddy's money on its own is enough in F1 that I question. £20 millions isn't NEARLY enough to get him towards the top 3 cars in terms of investment in Williams.

And the top 3 budgets are such that they really don't need to £20 million so badly that they will take on someone who is, according to you, incapable of driving in a straight line unaided.

You assertion just doesn't stack up against any scrutiny.

I think its just an extension of your hyper-defensivism of the now retired Nico looking at the above!

I quite liked Nico as it happened and though much of the criticism was unfair. But don't take that out on the poor youngster....

Hard to say - I think we are seeing Williams closer to their ceiling than say, Mercedes.

I would gamble that the Mercs ultimate pace on the softest tyres and a warmest track will probably be a low 1.18?

I never said he can't drive in straight line though did I? I said with his Daddy backing him with money no object then he really needs to be WDC at some point.
My point is that Nico claimed these cars will make 'Gladiators' of the drivers when truth cars are not massively taxing to drive (unless pushing the limits but then anything can be taxing to drive pushed to the limits even a Morris Minor) are engineering masterpieces with magical aero packages that help the drivers stick to the tarmac and get round corners. And Stroll sort of highlights this.
Statistically there's pretty much no chance of death anymore and rarely even injury.
I rarely look at F1 drivers and think "wow how the hell can they keep that car on the black stuff they are God's", i just think "wow isn't aero engineering amazing".
Having said that I do find Max and Dan interesting as they get the cars into some mad shapes.

I also with Car racing (aside form me being an engineer so obsessed with the cars), I don't see the drivers, so with Motorcycle racing i see humans first then bike, car racing I see car, that's pretty much it. Nothing much they can do about this but early Senna footage you can see Senna at work in the car, now your lucky to see the top of the helmet...

Some people have a favorite driver, others just want to see the cars... i'm the latter, makes my opinions no less valid be them good or bad...at least they aren't biased.

A 1:17.2 from Alonso in the McLaren! That's given everything one hell of a shake - who would have thought that based on this mornings issues?

Even though we have demonstrated his money isn't enough to make a mid field car competitive in isolation - and not enough to be of interest to a top team if he wasn't good enough already?

You honestly still think the Williams is a midfield car? Come on Merc have given them something in return for helping out with Bottas and it's made the Williams fast. Its there to see, I called it and can't wait for it to be proven come Australia....
I know testing means pretty much jack all but then many are saying McLaren are finished already, so it means something and Williams are FAST and reliable.

I'm not, just pointing out the Nico "they will be gladiators!!" ste he came out with... as they clock up 2 GP's worth of laps in a day and Massa walks away with no visible signs of looking like he just wrestled a lion.

Surely any offerings from Mercedes would have been too late in the design cycle?
