Proposed 'shield', halo alternative, unveiled

How long before a plastic bag or similar gets wrapped around or trapped in the halo causing a visual obstruction for the driver and ruining a good race?
Slacken belts, reach forward, remove object, tighten belts, continue ...unlike when similar object goes into a side pod/ front wing & you have to pit& nice to see some are still putting aesthetics over driver safety
The problem with and decision like this is the unforeseen consequences.
I'll pretty much guarantee that there will be an accident at some point and the Halo will be blamed for making the drivers injuries worse. At that point the FIA will insist they are all removed before the next race.

Not that they can do that themselves anyway. They have to have someone reach in to do their belts up for them because the cockpits are too tight.

It's funny, I never heard of any WEC drivers complaining or coming back to the pits feeling dizzy, funny they can triple stint sometimes without issue, if they can can make a screen work I don't think it's beyond the wit of well funded F1 teams to do the same
Firstly, the Shield is a much tighter radius than a WEC screen, so the distortion will be greater. Also, the WEC driver looks only through the screen, so his eyes will be adjusted to it, whereas the F1 driver would have only part of his sight line through the screen, and partly unobstructed, so it would be like half looking through a thick spectacle lens all the time.Pebbles167 said:
Both the aero screen and the shield look better than the halo, and both presumably provide at least the same level of protection. Is there any proper info as to why the halo is best and being chosen by the FIA? Or is it just that its the most developed of the proposed devices and time is short?
Both the shield and screen have fundamental issues of how they deal with rain, and also oil. WEC cars have windscreen wipers for rain and I can't see how those could be used on the tight arc of a shield / screen. The halo, being open, means that rain and oil come onto the driver's visor as normal and there is no change.
Personally, I think the halo looks bloody ridiculous, but I'm sure we'll get used to it. It's very hard to argue against additional head protection on aesthetic grounds.

Nobody is against driver safety but it is about compromise and this is not a good one in my view.

Hmm... are you serious? Surely you have seen just how difficult it is for the drivers to get their belt on and off? They usually have a mechanic secure it for them and they often struggle to get it off... unlikely they could slacken it mid race and then tighten it again and as if that would be safe anyway
It's actually physically impossible to do up your own belts in a F1 car as there is insufficient elbow room to get sufficient purchase. ash73 said:
Convenient that Seb, who was in trouble with the FIA recently, abandoned his test early "feeling dizzy" and rubber stamped their selection just in time.
FIA - Look Seb, we really need to introduce head protection asap otherwise we'll get sued if we're not already, we favour the halo over the screen, can you help?Seb - How about we [Ferrari] dedicate all of an FP1 to test our version of the shield and after a lap I'll complain of feeling dizzy and need to cut short the test?
FIA - That's it Seb and clears the road for the halo
Seb - Right, have you come to a decision on my punishment for Baku?
FIA - Why what happened in Baku........?

but they can always use option B ...pit, exactly the same as if they were unfortunate enough to get said litter in a side pod
