You know with the obvious 2007 issues aside i really am finding it hard to find any reason not to really like Alonso.

That man has balls and credit to MCL for letting him go do it - one suspects that this sort of flexibility will keep him for the rest of the season and might even help swing a new 12 month contract if the car can qualify for Q3 by the end of the year.

I would have loved to have seen JV do the triple but that isn't going to happen as he wasn't as fast as his team mates back in the pug days and is unlikely to be any faster these days, even if Toyota or Porsche found space for him. Alonso on the other hand - well aren't MCL looking at going back there...
Alonso, I think, has resigned himself to the fact he isn't going to have another realistic chance at another F1 WDC, so is looking for other ways to cement his "one of the all time greats" status by wining other prestigious races, and despite the crap season he is going to have this year he actually seems a lot more affable and chilled than he has ever done.

Crikey, I wasn't expecting that.
Great stuff, does it show that F1 is starting to lose its appeal ?

It's a bloody hoax. Alonso is only doing it to smuggle back a decent honda engine out his indy car.

This is very cool, will be tuning in to see how he gets on, hope it goes well for him. He deserves some success after enduring the Ferrari and McLaren years he's had.

Indycar streams practice sessions free on their youtube channel, but not the race of course.

This was sufficiently surprising, I checked the date twice before checking two other sources before believing it.

What a kick in the teeth for McLaren. They must have been forced to release Alonso for this as this was their best chance of doing something this season (at least until Honda produce an engine that doesn't shake itself and the car apart).

I'm still not sure what really to think from Alonso's perspective. Maybe he's considering Indycar next year for a full season? Honda would love that, I'm sure (and the Honda engines dominated last weekend, well, until half of them blew up ...)

And the Indy 500 isn't just a weekend thing. It goes on for about 4 weeks. Alonso is going to be back-and-forth for a month on this. I haven't checked the dates, but I suspect he'll end up compromised at at least one other race.

Stunned.

Mansell won on his Indycar debut and then won the championship that year to boot....

Looking forward to it.

Indy 500 May sessions from 1st practice 15th to race day on the 28th +/- a day or two for travel there and back.

F1.
Barcelona GP 14th May
Monaco GP 28th May

So he is going to be flying direct from Spain and out on track at Indy the next day.

Ps. He has missed rookie orientation & testing - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2017_Indianapolis_50...

I also doubled checked the date to make sure it wasn't an April fool I'd missed!

Assuming it isn't Button that subs for Alonso what are their other options? I can't remember off hand who McLaren have on their books. It'll be Button though... won't it?!

This has been shown on BT Sport in the past, but has also always been on Premiere Sports. They will likely have an offer on which you can take up for the month - I recall doing so for the Indy 500 when Takuma Sato almost won it but fell foul on the last lap.

He's going for the Triple Crown.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triple_Crown_of_Moto...

Can't cement his status as "a great" in that Donkey of a car this year, and is thinking with the level he is driving at, at the moment that being only the 2nd person in history to do it, would be better. (Graham Hill is the only other)

This first, then Le Mans. Montoya is on two out of the three I think.
No. Montoya is on 1 out of 3....he's only won the Indy 500, not the F1 WDC or Lemans 24hr.

Mario Andretti came the closet to emulating Graham Hill, with a 2nd place at Lemans almost giving him the Triple Crown.
Although Mario does also have a unique Triple crown himself, being the only driver to have won the F1 WDC, Indy 500 and the Daytona 500.

The original triple crown is Monaco, Indy 500 and Le Mans. He has two of those.

I might have guessed Mansell had 2 too, but it seems he never won at Monaco.

I wonder if Alonso might try and add the Daytona 500 too. That is a very different game to the other 3.

They should ditch Barcelona too, and go and race in the GP there. To be honest, Alonso will learn a lot more about how the car behaves there than driving *ROUND AND ROUND AND ROUND AND ROUND*. It would also give Jenson (or whomever, but let's assume for now it's JB) a chance to spend a weekend in the McLaren before Monaco.

Neither LeMans or Indy are likely to be won by FA at his first attempt.... so missing the rookie stuff is not such a big deal...

I reckon this will become his routine over the next few years...

Mansell never won the Indy 500 anyway (came oh so close to it though!) or raced at Lemans.

Fittipaldi doesn't have 2 out 3 either, but came close with 2 x 2nd's at Monaco, but never again raced at Lemans.
