Looks like the Toro Rosso is running some kind of downward facing camera. Just behind the front axle near the tea tray.

They are having to light the track surface. I wonder what this is about... track surface analysis?

It was discussed during one of the practice sessions. Karen thought it was dynamically measuring ride height but an engineer tweeted in to tell them it was measuring ground speed.

Interesting if thats what it is! I am no F1 engineer but I can think of lots of easier more reliable ways to do that. Its clearly optical and they are looking for detail given they are lighting the surface. Wonder if we will see anyone else running a similar set up?

Yes I noticed that too. Remember seeing Audi running something similar at Le Mans a few years ago.

Interesting that it didn't appear that any of the other F1 cars were running it.

Ground speed sensor, also happens to measure slip angle. Sensing ground speed and slip angle based on wheel rotation is apparently not accurate enough with the new tyres.

I saw it in the FP2 and thought fair enough they are taking measurements for their data. I was surprised to see it still there in the race.

You can just see the light under the nosecone.
