Thanks, OP. thumbup

No worries about the 2016 results. I used to just copy wiki results into an excel sheet and concatenate them together using =Concatenate("||",cell1,"||",cell2,"||",cell3,"||")

The way I read it is that they are 6kg over what they can be/need to be which obviously means they aren't running ballast at all, and are stuck with weight where it naturally appears on the car.

What they are working on is making the car lighter wherever possible to then enable them to be able to run ballast and therefore position that where they want.

For example if they can save 10kg they will have 4kg of ballast to play around with.
My understanding is, overweight in F1 terms = car meets minimum weight but no option for ballast. Could explain some of their tyre woes. Force India were/are overweight too, but asked Perez to lose some weight so the car can meet the min weight, IIRC. It's unlikely that Merc ran over the min weight in the early races.
Their analysis was that they were losing out to Ferrari because they had a heavier car, hence they have been loosing weight in a number of areas since

That runs with the 6/10ths bit I suppose, although once or twice in the years I've been following F1 I've known team managers to not want to frighten the truth by coming too near it.

I would have thought that the teams would have built their cars to under the weight limit so they could play with ballast. Still, what do I know? I said the RB battle would be the one to watch this season.

I am not a massive fan of Catalunya. I think the S/F straight will be the sole place for passes but it should be an improvement over Sochi. Let's hope so.

6kg weight loss will save about 0.2s.
Not according to Mercedes calculations

Hmm im sure brudle used to always coment you burn 10kg of fuel a lapand that cost 3/10ths of a second. so 6kg equating to 2/10s sounds about right to me.

Joe Saward reporting that the Mercs will now be running a shorter wheelbase. This will, apparently, help their tyres.

EFA. They use 100kg of fuel in a race... are they 10s faster by the end?
They don't use 100kg, even in 2014 Merc were starting with less than that. They also have a few kg left at the end of the race. Its why you don't hear much about fuel saving any more.

Fastest race laps are often set near the end of the race.

The overwhelming factor in race end lap times is tyre wear. They are also typically in engine preservation mode, given they only have 4 for the entire year there is little point in pushing it hard. This is another issue that isn't talked about much..

The point is they aren't burning 100kg in a race, so the 10 second thing doesn't apply.

And help them get around the hairpins in Monaco in a couple of weeks time.

0.03s per kg per lap in qualifying trim has been around as a rule of thumb for a few years, but can't necessarily be applied across multiple rule changes. Weight will have less effect on lap time when rules are more biased towards aero-generated grip as opposed to mechanical grip, and different tyres will have different load/grip curve (it's not a linear relationship). Also bear in mind that the current cars are 20% heavier than they were just a few years ago, so 1kg change will have a commensurately smaller effect overall.

So, the cars have been to scrutineering today...

And bloody hell, Merc are going all out with putting trinkets on. This thing is a freaking behemoth! With a platypus nose!

Or may be anteater nose?

Tyre puncturing implements.

the coke bottle is slimmer at the back.

monkey seat

Force India coke bottle looking sleek.

Sauber backend with a fairly trimmed wing.

I completely 'get' the purpose of the floor - and the reason why its there - but that big slab of carbon fibre spoils the looks of the cars. They would all be so much prettier (IMHO) if its application was kerbed more

I would love to know how much that little lot cost to design and build.

Probably more than anyone outside the top three's front wing.

The statistic being bandied around is that there's been 10 different winners at the Spanish GP in the last 10 years so with that in mind and the fact that Red Bull wont be bringing any mega upgrades with them I reckon it'll be:

BOT
RAI
HAM
