Works at Le Mans

Although nighttime running probably has something to do with that!

Worked for decades before.

In the fifties

In the Sixties

In the Seventies (look familiar?)

The Eighties

The Nineties

All stupid - nothing iconic there

I quite like it - its only in the last ten years or so that the numbers have become less conspicuous

Re the red five era with mansell, there was less going on in the races then, it was just racing. The cars were fundamentally different in profile and shape as well, not just colour. Single seaters looking too alike is a common theme now, or I'm just getting old.

I couldn't care less. Its a race, not a fashion parade.

If bigger numbers are easier to identify then fair enough

Seems a weird thing to get uppity about :-)

I like the bigger numbers and the changes that they have made.

With endurance racing particularly the number lights for positions are fantastic and a real improvement to the show. Watching the BES last weekend you could tell immediately if you were looking at a class battle or a lead battle or just a fast back marker getting in the way.

With the lack of more than 6 at the very most cars at the pointy end of an F1 grid though it am not sure that they are needed. Even the most brain dead should be able to cope with 18 cars, all of which are easily identifiable as being a Red Bull, a Ferrari, etc. when you have 7+ makes and even those in the same team could be totally different colours and run at different ends of the grid the light panels really come into their own.

Brilliant idea, it's always been difficult to distinguish cars on track. They could be even bigger.

And I think the execution by Ferrari is the best!

Trackside in Spain at the weekend it was easy to tell drivers, apart from Force India and McLaren.

Is it me or do there new larger numbers and first 3 letter look stupid on the cars?

Do we really need them ? The sky pundits are all saying it's a good idea, but it looks rubbish especially the Ferraris on the front nose.

With increased head protection surely on its way we'll all need to get used to identifying the drivers by their numbers.

Part of the problem is that the drivers no longer have easily recognisable helmet designs which, combined with the invisible numbers, means that you need to have a timing screen in front of you to work out who's in the car.

The drivers change the designs more frequently these days too (but I know it has been limited to once a year) and I don't really keep up to date with them. Mind you I have to say that Hulkenburg's new design looks really good this year - a nice, simple design that really works on the TV and far better than that awful green he ran in '16.

Force India not at all happy- https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/force-india-ang... .
Fair point really- if the car passed scrutineering like that, how can it later be declared illegal?

The numbers are still not big enough, and are difficult to spot on a lot of the cars, especially on the sides, and particularly Force India.
It was a lot easier to see them back in the 1960's.

I got to the F1 at Silverstone in 2013 and had a hard time telling teammates apart. The GP2 cars seemed a lot easier thanks to the clearly marked numbers on the side of the rear wing.

I would like to see the name's and number moved to a standard place on each car, so you can tell exactly who it is at a glance.

I recently said on another thread on here (forget which now) that in my opinion the sharkfins should all be white with the drivers' names and numbers in black. Sorted.
