Surely the McLarens will come out, chance of row 3/4 start?
I'd imagine only one will be coming out.....
...and the other has a penalty?
Both have penalties.
Vandoorne has a 3-place drop given to him for colliding with Massa in Barcelona, JB has a 15-place drop for PU component changes.

Could this year get any more unpredictable ? 129 races since Kimi's last pole.

Ferrari now have a headache. Kimi will want to mount his WDC charge, Vettel will want to take advantage of Lewis's misfortune. So what do Ferrari do ? It'd be quite unlike Ferrari to let them race.

Bottas doing a good job - purple in his last S3 but wasn't quite enough. So is it style that shows the problems up with the Merc or is it that Lewis tries to run a different set up ? bit of both ? Whilst Bottas looked gentle on throttle out of corners his car looked better than Lewis's.

Either way they have lots of homework to do.

Vandoorne's car might even need a tub if he destroyed suspension mounts.

Grid interviews - good idea in theory but both times the execution has been poor. Sort it out LM!

ETA: Dont forget, Nurburgring 24 race starts in 20 minutes, live stream here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4qJDbQSp6mA
Cars will start formation laps in 2 minutes from now.

I think the general feeling is that the McLaren chassis is pretty decent, however it's hugely compromised at many circuits by having to run lower downforce to compensate for the lack of power.
McLaren's chassis/aero development has been consistently better since Peter Prodromou changed their approach from "go for the peak number" to "biggest usable downforce in a range", and since then, their correlation rate got much better too, so the stuff they are bringing is overwhelmingly working rather than half of it not working, as in previous years.

The chassis/aero is probably around the 4th best on the grid (behind Merc, Ferrari, Redbull) - in terms of development they have caught up massively in the last two seasons.

The PU (peak power, economy, etc) is their main problem.

You can't develop a leading chassis if you're constantly running the lowest drag settings you can get away with, to offset the lack of power and economy from your PU.

FIA shouldn't use those microphones they ordered from Norman Collier.

Hrmm. Which order do they apply the penalties in?

I guess McLaren are on top of this, but if svd's penalty was applied before Button's penalty, then perhaps it would have been more sensible not to send out JB in Q3.

I'll have to look this up, I suppose it's in the sporting regs.

Watched C4 for the first time in a while. Coulthard, Chandok, Webber - the rest are a waste of bandwidth.

I wonder if Kimi will be allowed by the team to finish ahead of his WDC leading team mate tomorrow?

Will Bottas be asked to back everyone up for Hamilton?

Pole is perhaps 80% of the job at Monaco? Obviously not crashing in the race is the other thing....

It would be great to see Kimi win but in reality if he gets into T1 first tomorrow will Ferrari allow him to win? I suspect they will either use team orders or Vettel will be given the chance to get the lead with the under cut (depending on what is the preferable strategy tomorrow, tyre deg looks low so actually the 'over cut' could be better).

Still, 9 years between pole positions is pretty incredible and it isn't like it was a total fluke because he missed golden chances to stick on pole already this year, Russia being the obvious one.

I think Ferrari will let whoever is leading at the start will get the (as long as there are no strange goings on) win as they'll want the 1-2 more than WDC points for Seb also there'll be a Mercedes snapping at their heels so I don't see them having the chance to play games.

So I'm still right about button over vandoorne! Jb qualifies ahead of vandoorne in a car he had never driven and hasn't driven a F1 car since November

Yet vandoorne puts it in the wall!

Ok the penalty for jb is unlucky but to me he has made vandoorne look amateur! And mclarens board of directors must look at it as well!

Vandoorne can't even match alonso when the chips are down!

I hope jb gets points tomorrow and cements all that
