The OH decided last night that she wants to go to the British GP. After looking on the Silverstone website and, firstly, almost dying of shock - £179 for general admission! - I started to wonder which place would be best. As me and the OH are both 5' 7" we don't want to be stood on a flat area as we'll see nothing if any fully grown blokes are in front of us. I know some of the GA areas are on sloped banking, but the map on the website doesn't say which are and which aren't. I fancy being on the bit in front of the Abbey stand and photos suggest that bit is flat - what time would I have to arrive to be at the front?

We sat in front of Becketts last year where there's a bit of a slope.
We were staying onsite and after speaking to some regulars we (by that I mean everyone apart from me as I was hungover) got up about 5am and went to stick our deckchairs in our chosen spot.
apart from the obvious obstruction there was a fine view.
However I've only been once so someone else may well have a better suggestion.

Pay the extra and sit in a Grandstand. Unfortunately I see Club Corner is sold out.

rofl

Not a chance on my budget.

Anyway, cheers guys. I've done some more digging. There doesn't appear to be a sloped GA area anywhere now, so I'm fancying the area in front of the Abbey grandstand. I guess we'd just have to get there in good time.

Walk the track Saturday, get set up at Beckets on Sunday. We set up at 8.30; all very civilised, well more so than 20000 of us crouched up on the bank at Pouhan at Spa!
Take your radio and a cool box etc

Abbey looks perfect - just a case of what time to rock up to get a spot. What time do the gates open?

The last few years the gates have opened at 6. We normally start queuing at Stowe somewhere between 4 - 4.30 am putting us about 5th or 6th in that queue which has gave us a pretty good range on places. I'd expect all the good GA places to be filled by 6.10!!!

Personally if I was spectating that area i'd push as far up towards abbey as possible to get a good view down the start finish and to the loop.

Are you planning to camp at the circuit or drive in???

That's exactly what I was thinking.

Drive in. Either from Yorkshire on the day or from Oxford if some friends who'd let us stay with them are around that weekend.

Or you could try going up in front of the farm stands and push as far down to Abbey as possible if the you fail to get down to abbey. Im not 100% sure you can get a view down the start/finish from there thou.

It may be worth investing is some 3 rung steps or 1 of those low platforms. If you feel your view is obstructed just go to the back of the GA area and stand on the steps. I've done that a few times on the Luffield terracing so I can take photos over the catch fence. (btw avoid the terracing its a death trap!) I may do it down at Stowe this year because the number of people unwilling to use their legs has increased over the years. If you see someone with a camera they're going to take photos. Don't complain when you pitch up 5 minutes before the race and they stand up to take photos. Sorry off topic, but it makes me a rage.

It would be a very long day from Yorkshire, but i'm guessing you already know that. Probably worth ponying up for parking at the circuit too.
