Fernando intimated that he'd be open to offers, and that the only team he couldn't go to was RBR as both Max and Dan Ric were both under contract to them for 2018.
The real wild card in the pack would seem to be Kimi. If he retires, it owns up possibilities for the rest of the field to move. Likewise, Massa, and to a lesser extent, Bottas.
If none of these move,I can see the drivers' market being somewhat static, with the possible exception/s of Kvyat and Palmer being booted.

Alonso and Williams? No one mentioned that...unlikely but I'd like to see it for some reason. I'm sure Williams make a good car, they just never have people who can pedal it properly.

That williams is a 5th best car at best. they had a decent car 2 years ago and have just gone backwards.

Williams are notorious for paying their driver's relatively poorly. One of the reasons Button didn't go back when he had a chance so I doubt Alonso would even consider it. Irrelevant anyway as the car is not there and doesn't look like it is going to be anytime soon.

This. What would be the point, smaller teams like Williams and Force India are extremely unlikely to ever be able to produce a championship winning car under the current regulations. At least with McLaren and Renault the resources are in place so there is a hope they can get their act together sooner or later.

I can't recall what sort of edge Alonso had over Massa but I suspect if you deduct Alonso's pace advantage from what Massa has achieved this year you would find the Williams is still not close to being competitive.

Force India are doing great for a small team. Rumours keep circulating of an ownership change soon. If Alonso went there, surely they'd be able to bring more money in...

...stranger things have happened!

Vijay's probably off to jail soon. Someone else *has* to buy it.

No chance.

Rumours of an ownership change are because Subrata Roy (boss of Sahara) is currently on bail after being charged in 2014 because his company hasn't returned billions to investors that it should have. Roy didn't show up for court, saying his mother was ill. He got arrested was a big bail figure set, he managed to get out in 2016, but his legal issues are still ongoing

Mallya had an arrest warrant issued on him for not repaying debts in India, it looks like he got tipped off and skipped the country and is currently hiding out in a mansion in Hertfordshire. India had submitted an extradition request for him that is currently in progress.

Frankly, if it doesn't get sold it will go to the wall.

I think all Alonso wants is a reasonably competitive/reliable drive/car !

I seem to recall many years ago Senna offering to drive for them for free (when thay had a very competitive car)

They've been quietly building a more and more competitive team and on some circuits this season they are challenging Red Bull as 'Best of the rest'. They are showing a clean pair of heels to the midfield teams and will easily retain their 4th place in the Constructors championship this season. They are too good to fail - someone will buy them, even if it's only for a nominal sum.

The problem, up until now at least, that they won't let it go for a nominal sum. Mallya and Roy are reportedly holding out for $250M for the team. It may be that their personal legal situations become such that they are forced to sell for whatever they can get, but we don't seem to be there yet. It all seems to have gone quiet on the Mallya front since he was reportedly arrested to be extradited a few weeks ago.

They are also constrained by their current budget. If a richer owner comes in it will be 2019 or more likely 2020 before that investment will be realised on track. Renault at least are in their second year of their latest programme, so realistically it is them or McLaren who offer the best chance of getting Fernando in on the Merc, Ferrari, RedBull party.

It's a well known rumour that Hamilton wants to drive for Ferrari at some point in his career.
Is it?

I know he tends to blow a little hot and cold on the subject but the overall line from Hamilton seems to be that having red overalls doesn't really interest him....

Robert Kubica is testing for Renault at Valencia circuit today, driving a 2012 Lotus F1 car. I know it's still quite a long shot at this point, but what a comeback story that would make.

There is no way Kubica is coming back to F1. Would be a great story, but its not gonna happen.
Palmer out and Buemi in (after Le Mans) is a left field possibility as he's been driving well in FE and WEC, has the relevent hybrid know how, and still carries (I think) some Red Bull driver sponsorship.

You never know if someone likes the PR angle he might.

To be honest it always feels a but like F1 is the ex he can't get over. I don't see the fuss personally as so many other series have a wonderful and more romantic appeal than F1, but I'm odd....

You want what you want, and what he wants is F1. I get the feeling he'll turn 50 long before he gives up on it.

You can guarantee, with his luck and judgement, whether he chooses a Williams, Mercedes or Renault , it will be beaten by a McLaren Honda within a year or two......
