I agree somebody else should get the seat for 2018, I don't think Kubica is up to it though unfortunately.
I wonder what it would take. Full lock steering seems to be an issue? Would it need a different, wider tub? Or different level of power assistance? Or a rule change?
I think there are two main issues, firstly he would need a lot of elbow room as he doesn’t have full articulation, secondly I don’t think he has much dexterity in his right hand so whether he could manage all of the little buttons and switches in their usual position would be questionable, in addition there would be major question marks over whether he could extricate himself from the car fast enough- the FIA dictates that the driver must be able to exit the car without assistance in a matter of seconds (can’t remember if it’s 5 or 7…) unbuckling, pulling the drinks and radio connections, removing the head restraint and steering wheel and hoisting himself out of the car must be a very tall order with partial use of the right arm.

I am sure that adapting the steering rack ratio and power assistance for driver preference is commonplace already so I don’t think that part is insurmountable.

And Kubica says he can drive an F1 car "without limitation" http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/130189...

Maybe a spot of Uber mini cabbing might sharpen him up...

It seems more and more now like he down played how well the test went for him personally in the first couple of days after he did it and now he's seen more data/had chance to see how he'd recover physically after doing the equivalent to a full F1 weekend he's starting to be more open about the possibility of a return.

I'd like to see him back personally even to just replace Palmer for the last 3 or 4 races, there'd be no expectation on him but it would give the team the chance to gather more info on how well he'd do on a full time return. And let's face it, could he do worse than failing to score any points?

Yes, of course if could be worse. F1 got more dangerous this year, the heaviest (most energetic) vehicles with the highest cornering speeds in history.

I think we will be lucky not to see catastrophic, deadly crashes in the near future.

Robert is more likely to fare worse in one of those than a fully able bodied person.

How do you figure that? Any accident of that magnitude will leavbe the driver needing to be extracated and he'l lbe in the same safety cell as all the others. I agree he may be hindered slightly in the event of a normal accident where he has to haul himself out but surely that'll be almost no different to getting out the car at the end of the race

Would he psychologically be able to race in an F1 race now though? An accident of that magnitude surely has some lasting effects.

He has raced a lot since, and been testing. His arguably bigger (at least g forces) was in F1 at Canada.

To all of you questioning Robert Kubica's physical and psychological ability to return to top motorsport ever again, can I remind you of Alessandro Zanardi?
Was almost killed in a crash in the CART series at the Lausitzring, lost both his legs above the knees but came back to become a succesful WTCC driver.
Managed to extricate himself from his car with no problems at all when I met him for an extrication test at Circuit Zolder a couple of years ago (BTW, he's a great guy).
And doesn't seem to suffer from psychological consequences of his near fatal accident.
In between he even managed to get a gold medal at the Paralympics.

What did he do after his massive crash in a rally car?

Go and do the WRC.... That's hardly the signs of a man scarred by his experience, especially given how many shunts he has in WRC cars after that aswell, pretty much all of them big ones.

Kubica not on the 2018 list for Renault : https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/f1-kubica-not-l...

If you read the article I think you can add a "yet". Basically what he's saying is he can't get in the car tomorrow.

Also, he makes it quite clear that they have a contract for "all of 2017" with Palmer, so I would assume that means he won't be binned this season.

Not necessarily as a race driver though.

Must be tough - get into a negative cycle, a bit like Kyvat did after being demoted. Vicious world, F1.

I guess the only opportunity might be one of the new teams for 2019 that are rumoured... he would bring money and some experience.
