The elevation map is just wrong. The last one had the seafront at Monaco 156ft above sealevel.

Just like Monaco, Canada's F1 track is at sealevel - in the case of Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, it's on the Île Notre-Dame, made of reclaimed land in the middle of the St. Lawrence river.
It doesn't have significant elevation changes.

It's not wrong. It's just representing the data in an exaggerated way to display the finer detail that wouldn't show at 1:1 scale. 5m elevation difference over 4361m horizontal distance would otherwise just appear to be a straight line, and be pointless to show. This graph has something like 50x relative vertical scale, and a quick skim over the elevations in Google Earth shows them to be in the right ballpark.

The elevation map looks correct to me. 5.2m difference between the highest point and the lowest point suggests it's as near flat as you can get on an F1 track.

As to sea level - the circuit is no-where near the sea. It might be at river-level, but not sea level.

Montreal is a few metres above sea level. It is this elevation that allows the the river to flow towards the sea, otherwise it would be tidal. The St Lawrence River doesn't become tidal until nearly 200 miles further downstream.

This looks like a fairly significant elevation change on turn 2 exit to me...

FA's car just failed again. Told to stop the car straight away rather than to go back to the pits. Another excellent McHonda showing this weekend for sure!

Could be hydraulic rather than engine though

Fernando Alonso, speaking to Sky Sports on his way back to the paddock: "Something hydraulic but difficult to guess. The gearbox was doing strange things. We are used to it. FP1 is done, FP2 is hopefully trouble free. We will deliver. It is not a problem."

He must be going mad though, I'm going mad just reading about it. Almost every session, not just every weekend it seems to let him down. Whether its engine, hydraulics or whatever the end result is the same, stop the car and enjoy the long (or sometimes short) walk back to the pits.

This is McLaren, if it was Haas in only their second season or something it'd be bad but McLaren, legends of the sport. Honda have had their chance, it's not working, time to let the impossible dream die and begin rebuilding with a customer supply until they can secure something better. Finishing 8th with a Mercedes power unit is better than retiring when 12th with a Honda unit.

Did one of the marshals pushing VerStrapon's car stumble and run himself over? Sky cut to the ads just as he tripped.

That's not true. There's a thing called viscosity that makes a mess of that. The St Lawrence river is not much above sea level (I think 6m) and you can drive a big ship to the lower side of Montreal. The St Lawrence seaway consists of 7 locks, all upstream of Montreal, that get you all the way to the great lakes.

We needed some of your tyre analysis?

A lot of sandbagging going on, but LH not opening DRS shows they have plenty in hand. I suspect the apparent small difference in time Merc Vs Ferrari between SS and US does not bode well for Ferrari.

I may change that view during the race, of course.
