The formula must be money+pace, with the first weighted more.

To some extent it always has been.

Testing is testing.......Sirotkin murdered Kubica when it counted in Abu Dhabi.........and now Kubica is the number 3.........he obviously thinks there is still some headroom to his top performance level or he wouldnt be hanging around trying to get a drive......but at this point Sirotkin is better over a lap and on race pace.....all the info from the Abu Dhabi test is out there.
So why is Kubica murdering both Stroll and Sirotkin in testing?? biggrin

I have strong doubts about what timing system Williams were using that day.

I don't really see why people object so strenuously to pay drivers. F1 has always been at least as much about engineering as drivers and for a small team pay drivers mean significantly more money to spend on engineering which can obviously sometimes result in better results than putting better drivers in a less well engineered car.

There is also a big difference as well between a:

  • "pay driver" who has minimal talent (as back of the grid, struggling to qualify) and a big chequebook
and
  • a sponsor backed driver, who has some talent AND has a good backer
I don't think we have any pay drivers in the sport at present.

I guess the ultimate test would be "if this driver brings £0 to the team, does their talent/speed mean we are willing to go and find that funding elsewhere?"

Lance Stroll is more or less a pay driver.

Podium, Top 6 and points finishes say hes good enough to be in F1

F1 has always been about temas, with teams often switching drivers mid season to make sure the car had the best chance.......the driver is just an expensive component like a clutch or a suspension upright etc........t

I disagree. He is (reasonably) quick and has backing. He is not miles off the pace - but nor is he the next Senna.

Is he there just on merit? Nope... but then I'd argue almost no driver is. They have all moved up through the ranks with a combination of funding support and talent.

Anybody else remember Hector Rebaque? Pretty much helped Bernie pay for Piquet. I seem to recall reading that his gearbox needed replaced/ overhauled every race, whereas, Nelson managed 3 races.

Perez bring significant sponsorship with him from Mexican companies. Does that make him a pay driver? Verstappen brings some Dutch sponsorship too. Would you label him a pay driver? No doubt Force India having Mercedes driver Esteban Ocon brings some benefits to the team, most likely in cheaper engines. Does that make him a pay driver? Drivers have been bringing sponsorship with them for years and years. Even Alonso brought money from Santander to Ferrari when he was getting paid €20m+ a season.

Really? Noone has posited that opinion on this thread before now. What a revelatory insight.

interestign that Kubica is still considering a WEC drvie with Manor....but would Williams really allow this?

Their test/reserve driver and their development driver racing at the same time, for the same team in the same series away from F1 would surely leave the simulators sat idle for far too long

I think he's showing all the signs of being exactly that, just not the good one.

Given Alonso can probably manage the F1 and WEC, I doubt Williams will be too troubled in losing Kubica for 6 weekends.

Maybe. I'll make my own armchair call on him at the end of this season.

As I've previously stated, I'd love to see Kubica back on the starting grid. Is Sirotkin 'buying' the drive as he offered more cash than Robert K? Part of me believes this is the case, but: if Kubica genuinely was faster/better than the Russian, he'd probably score more points. What do points make - PRIZES, thus bringing more cash into the team than the difference between his and Sirotkin's 'golden hello'. Formula 1 is a strange beast indeed.
