I do wonder where ELUSIVEJIM and deadslow go to hide when Lewis pulls out a lap like this. All to eager to slag Lewis off but never around to congratulate him

It was quite amusing that the commentators were observing that Hamilton appeared to be driving a "measured, if not slightly cautious" lap, and Bottas as "really going for it" and then the stopwatch revealed that appearances can be deceptive. smile

That was a mind boggling lap for pole. On a totally different level to everyone else. Hoping for a close race tomorrow.

Ha ha I saw that too, bottas went faster and Lewis went faster still yet bottas was supposedly flying while Lewis was taking it steady, I do wonder what planet crofty is from sometimes! I was in town watching it on my tablet via sky go so didn't really catch a great deal through each qualy segment but based on what I saw yesterday in fp1 and 2 where the hell did Lewis find this pace, have Pirelli lowered the tyre pressures which suit the mercs OR my conspiracy theory is that Ferrari aren't burning oil since the directive and it's hurt their pace

In fairness, when I did my IAM training my instructor said that an advanced driver should appear to be driving very smoothly and unhurriedly until you get a stopwatch out.

Hamilton was just on another level.

If you ride with them, the commentators can be excused I think. LH seemed almost relaxed, even not taking risks. I know reality is different to perception, but that's how it seemed to me.

I always enjoyed watching LH. He's great during the race and stunning for qually, except for walkabout times. I didn't take to him when he was at McL although I enjoyed his driving. His move to Merc and the struggle to change. His driving, year on year, almost race on race, I've begun to like him as a person. Who couldn't on seeing his enjoyment, thrill in fact, after that lap. With Alonso on circuit I used to struggle to nod when ever someone suggested he was a great.

I was beaten up by my mates after that lap. I now admit that he's up there with any of them. Is that 42 poles?

It's a shame he hasn't got a driver alongside to challenge him at the moment but I reckon he's the most impressive driver I've seen in 49 years.

Oh, for sure. I think it's a mark of his greatness that he was so measured in his inputs.

Would like to see max make a place or bottas lose one off the start - just to frustrate any suspect repositioning by fez

42 poles for Ham? I think you've missed a few if so. That was 66th. Only 2 behind MS for most all time.

Vettel better hope he gets a good start, he's got the flying Dutchman next to him and if he bogs just a little he'll get sucked into the midfield and anything can happen, like Canada all over maybe even lose a corner against a wall, all that while Lewis gets a good start and vettel 25 point lead and more has evaporated, I'm liking this season already, tables could easily turn later in the season though back towards Ferrari

Yeah, I know. All this season I've been looking forward to a battle between the RB pair but fate takes a hand every damn race.

I've got the feeling there will be a few virtual pace cars in this race, and perhaps it being stopped and restarted. I doubt it will be a classic, but you never know.

Hopefully a better race than last year when Hamilton was driving round lost in the multi-level menus of his steering wheel with his engineer unable to tell him what menu options to select to put the engine into the correct mode. Which was a frankly ridiculous situation and an epic HMI fail.

Toto has pretty much ruled Alonso out when interviewed by Sky. He was very diplomatic but kind of implied that Fernando isn't a team player and he doesn't want the friction of Hamilton and Alonso, given their past beef.

Obviously he didn't say it as bluntly as that, and was much more circumspect, but that was the jist of it.
They had enough trouble with ham/ros and alonsos a fair way up the scoville scale compared to rosberg. I think anyone who employs alonso without a clear no1 staus setup would be deeply foolish.

Great lap from hamilton there, wasnt sure he could pull that out.
I don't know why there are people out there who think either Mercedes or Ferrari will have Alonso when they both are likely to still have Hamilton and Vettel aswell, there is no chance it will happen, both teams don't need two number 1's potentially taking points off each other and also the inevitable hassle that will come with it.

After three years of jogging around the back of the grid, smiling and making nice with the interviewers every tie his engine lets him dowm, I suspect that Alonso would move to Merc with "I'm number two in this team. I'm Hamilton's bh" written on his overalls.

That was almost the interviewer's question to Toto - would he take Alonso if Alonso offered to drive for free. And even then his diplomatic answer boiled down to "not a chance", with I think the phrase "team harmony" coming out at one point. smile

Davide Valsecchi, ex Gp2 champ, now commentator for Sky Italia.

If you fancy a laugh watch the F2 race tomorrow, he gets quite excited and is very Italian !
