Having seen Christian Horner (verbally) slap down Sainz over his "demands" live on Sky a couple of races ago, I very much doubt if that was in his contract. He's leaving because it suits the bigger picture where Red Bull are concerned.

It was no secret he wanted out, RB have Gasly waiting patiently for his chance and Renault wanted him too. As is the F1 way everyone eventually came to a mutually agreeable deal.

Write the story that first entered your head. - eg read their story about McLaren building its own engine.

There is a lot that they write now that does not actually happen. I think that they are simply seeking readership.

It's not the Autosport of old, but they do (still) normally separate speculation from more confirmed, multiple sourced news.

If this turns out to be all true... Renault get Sainz in place of JP, McLaren get Renault, Toro lose Sainz and get Honda... Toro Rosso do seem to be getting the stty end of the deal (unless Gasly turns out to be the next wonderkid and gets the car into higher positions it shouldn't be in, and Kyvat can't get close). Maybe TR will get money thrown at them to go with the Honda engines.

I will be so dissapointed if mclaren do go to Renault! But certainly sounds that way if sainz has signed for Renault
They have the choice between Honda and Renault... both of which look to be pretty bad options. To me it appears that Mercedes and Ferrari will be the only engines to have until the regulations change again... they are just too far ahead.

I think Sainz needs to be careful what he wishes for as well... I've not been massively impressed with him this year... his relative performance I think is made to look stronger due to how much Kvyat is struggling. If Sainz does switch to Renault (especially for the last few races this year) he could be made to look a bit silly by Hulkenberg.

TR has been for sale for a while - it supposedly costs more to run than the Red Bull team because they receive less prize money. This deal means they can test the Honda engine and if/when it comes good Red Bull get the works partnership they've been looking for. Honda will fund a chunk of the team expenses so for RB overall they save some cash and will be hoping for a long term benefit too.

For Honda they get an association with one of the best youth-oriented brands out there and a lower pressure environment to test in. They'll be paying less to TR than they did to McLaren too so are quids in.

McLaren get a more competitive engine in theory, but who knows how 2018 will go. They lose a big bag of cash from Honda and have to pay for customer engines instead. I'd stick my neck out and say this means they won't challenge for the championship until 2021 now.

For Renault, they now have two customer teams who can beat them next year. They risk losing one spot in the constructors standings for 2018 which is why they wanted something (Sainz) in return.

I think this is a great deal for RB and a big risk for McLaren.

So if Alonso stays at McLaren, who pays for him as I thought Honda did?

Ok McLaren get a more competitive engine and Alonso stays (TBH I don't see the massive love in with him staying), but surely without Honda, McLaren will be massively down on money.

I think this is the bones of the situation. It's clear from the noise in the market that McLaren will be looking to be part of a group that covers the cost of the development of a new power hint under the 2021 rules. Whether that's with Cosworth, Ricardo or one of the many parties looking at F1 for 2021 this is not clear snd probably won't be for some time.

The Indonesian connection is still in play for STR too. They could still change hands once the dust has settled (and it's conceivable that the change in ownership might also be one of the drivers for the change to Honda power.

I suppose Mclaren will be hoping that an improved engine will raise their sponsorship potential enough to cover it. I can't see them making enough to cover both the engine and Alonso's salary, though.

If Alonso has any sense he will have cut his salary demands in return for McLaren making a drastic change in order to give him a more competitive engine to race with. There's no way he can expect to be paid the $50m or whatever he was getting now that McLaren's budget is suddenly $120m less than it was the previous year.

I guess we'll really see if he's the team player he likes to portray, or if he was really in it for the money.

Mansour is worth over $3b apparently. Maybe he will fund the team. Just give Alonso helmet/clothing sponsorship rights and let him do his own thing and keep the cash...

People with that kind of money don't tend to keep hold of it by throwing large chunks at projects like McLaren. They persuade other people to do that!

Has anyone seen what the percentage ownership of the McLaren Group is post the Ron buyout? My expectation is that Ojjeh sticks at 25% with the Bahrainis owning 75%.

True, my point is more that they don't have to put money in directly to keep Alonso. Just free him up to earn more through personal sponsorship, reduce his event days (and let him monetize them himself) and contract Button as the ambassador.

Ironically it was honda who insisted on him no? As they "pay his wages", who exactly is Alonso contact with anyway?

People are missing the obvious:

• Sainz to Renault.
• Renault power McLaren.
• Alonso stays at McLaren.
• Honda to Toro Rosso.
• Kvyat wins the WDC in 2018 after Honda make massive inroads over the winter.
• Alonso tops himself.

Given McLaren's capacity to get things wrong, most of the time, I think Kyviat ahead of Alonso has some potential.

I really don't see them fighting with Red Bull for best Renault PU team.
