I must add that I thought Felipe Nasr looked quite good, unfortunately not very conspicuous as he was at Sauber.

I agree but that’s the situation the team finds itself in thanks to the decisions of the past year or two (or more)… Who would you like to see in the frame who isn’t already under contract elsewhere or subject to some other team allegiances etc etc? Remember whoever it is has to be 25+ years of age and have the experience to lead the team and bring points.

I think Stroll is coming on and could well have an F1 drive on merit given time but for 2018 Williams have very limited options for its other driver.

I was never a Di Resta fan, as you and Vaud have said he came across as a miserable so-and-so with accountability issues- frankly I don’t see why you’d pick him over Palmer as IMO they are from a very similar mould in many ways.

The Kubica comeback is a great story but I’m not convinced he can do it, he doesn’t look fit even if you discount the arm. I know he has done an extended test but…

Are any one of these guys significantly better than Massa? I’m really not sure. But I am glad they are tackling this properly with comparative tests.
They have an issue.

Who is:

  • Available
  • Affordable
  • Over 25
  • With a super licence
  • With experience of the modern era
  • Good with sponsors
It's a short list. Massa, Palmer, Di Resta

I though Di Rest acquitted himself well given the notice he had, but I don't see him as the future of Williams.

There are a raft of younger drivers but they fail the 25 year old requirement.

Motorsport.com are reporting that Mercedes are trying to place Wehrlein there, in spite of the age issue.

Well if the sponsors get a part refund I'm sure they will find a way.

Button?

Kvyat if Gasly replaces him?

Will Haryanto still be under contract for 2018? Wasn't there an American dude at some point?

Button doesn't want to race again, he made that clear at Monaco. Maybe brand ambassador.

Kvyat - hadn't though of him. He might bring some Russian money to Williams and he is pretty fast when he keeps it on the track.

Very true about Button. Although, if I'm not mistaken, he started out with Williams? Would be interesting to see him go back to his first team!

Aside from the history at the end of the contract, yes.

Jenson had to pay, by all accounts, to get out of the binding Williams contract.

Kvyat will be at Toro Rosso with Gasly. Remember Saintz is going to Renault.

I'm torn....

DiResta isnt strong enough to lead the team and has been out of the game too long.
Kubica had the potential but again been out of the game too long.
Massa has been in the game too long and hasn't managed to steer the team from the car.

of the 3, I'd take Kubica, publicity is a huge tool and he's better on camera/mic.

Given they're looking at Kubica and DiResta you have to consider drivers outside the current F1 grid who might have earned a crack. I'd have been looking stateside at the top 2/3 Indy drivers who have a huge fanbase, may have been available and should gain support from Liberty Media. Simon Pagenaud / Will Power both meet the age criteria and are former champs.

fk me people are suggesting Button? rofl The perennial nice guy (in front of the cameras) who achieved nothing more than a fluke win over Barricello?

Rosberg. All. Day. Long.

Whether they can get him is another thing, but regardless they should be begging his team and offering him the world to come back.

If you're considering Di Resta you may as well say 'fk it' and consider Palmer... he's probably just as bad and comes with money.

Fair point... Or two new drivers with some Honda influence?

With the restrictions they have, I'd be trying to prise Buemi away from Toyota WEC.

It's bizarre isn't it, with the amount of constant moaning about the old guys should move over to make way for young blood, that Williams are left with such limited options to find an over 25 driver...

If you're casting the net in that direction, how about Alexander Rossi - Indy 500 winner with hybrid-era F1 experience, and old enough for the sponsors?

Nobody waiting in the wings as far as I'm aware, Matsusta's superlicense prospects are pretty much impossible now.
