It has felt like it has been on the cards - but official announcement now
"The decision to retire has been a difficult one for me to take, and I have spent a lot of time thinking about it; at the end of the year I want to take some more time to reflect on what I will focus on next; it is very clear to me that, being a father, I want to spend more time with my family. But today is not about saying goodbye."

I always wonder about these 'retirement' statements. Loeb, Rossi, Webber all announced their retirements - but carried on in other series. So they didn't retire - merely moved to another series. My guess, Vettel isn't retiring, he's just ending his F1 career - and will be seen in another series.

Quite - the statement says 'retire from F1'Sad to see him go. I'm sure he hasn't been everyone's favourite over the years, but in the last couple I think he's shown that he's a decent bloke.
I think his time at Ferrari seemed to affect him in a bad way (Like Alonso), luckily he didn't retire after that and had a few less stressful years.

So sad to see Seb retire. He's only 35! Will be much missed by the sport. He is one of the two 'grown ups' who takes on the wider issues.

AHH Seb. Gonna miss that guy!
Potentially very good news for DR though
Aston Martin would've known about this for a while presumably and DR said he is 'staying at Mclaren' only a week ago. Potentially very good news for DR though

agreed - he seem to go a little of the rails a little under the pressure, then when he left he went back to his cheeky relaxed self.... its a shame he's leaving as he's become very outspoken about the hypocrisies in the sport and the FIA . By and large a pretty decent bloke. I wish him well.
His Red Bull years did not paint him in a good light in terms of personality. The finger, a sense of entitlement, Multi-21, not taking the '14 car being poor very well, etc. However, in the last 5 years or so, he has matured significantly and changed the perception to one of being a thoroughly decent sort.
In many ways, he isn't given the credit he deserves for his success - you don't win over 50 races and 4 titles by accident or luck. People have short memories.
I wish him well too. Hope we see him in another series.
