One for the statisticians (& old timers) wink & in light of the recent press conference question about having Alonso as a teammate

Of those drivers that have claimed a WDC, how many of them have managed to beat over a season, another (current or future) WDC whilst they were teammates?

off the top of my head i've got:

Lewis Hamilton: 3 (Alonso, Button, Rosberg)
Nico Rosberg: 2 (Schumacher, Hamilton)
Sebastian Vettel: 1 (Räikkönen)

obviously more to add to the list & but is 3 the record?

Shouldn't Ham technically be 2. Yes he beat Rosberg, but not after he'd won the title as he ran away.

Button beat Villeneuve over a season in 2003, although it wasn't technically a whole season as JV was dropped for the last race. Button was already ahead at that point though, so it should count.

Lewis Hamilton didn't really beat Alonso, they tied on points. 109 points each and same number of wins.

5 - Prost (Senna, K Rosberg, Mansell, D Hill, Lauda)
2 - Lewis (Button, Rosberg)
2 - N Rosberg (Hamilton, Schumacher)
2 - Alonso (Kimi, Button)
2 - Button (Hamilton, Alonso)
2 - Juan Manuel Fangio (Farina, Ascari)
1- Vettel (Kimi)
1 - D Hill (Villeneuve)
1 - Clark (G Hill)
1 - G Hill (J Stewart)
1 - Lauda (Prost)
1 - Farina (JM Fangio)
1 - Ascari (Farina)
1 - Hawthorne (P Hill)
1 - J Brabham (D Hulme)
1 - Rindt (Fittipaldi)
1 - Fittipaldi (D Hulme)
1 - Hulme (J Brabham)
1 - Piquet (Mansell)

Thats all I can think of so far

What do the record books show? They show Hamilton second, Alonso third, based on count back as previously pointed out. Therefore Hamilton has 3, just like Button.

Having had a look, this is what I could come up with:

Driver WDC WDCs Beaten Comment
Alain Prost 4 5 Lauda (1985); Rosberg (1986); Senna (1989); Mansell (1990); Hill (1993)
Lewis Hamilton 3 3 Alonso (2007); Button (2010, 2012); Rosberg (2013, 2014, 2015)
Jenson Button 1 3 Villeneuve (2003); Hamilton (2011); Alonso (2015)
Niki Lauda 3 2 Piquet (1979); Prost (1984)
Fernando Alonso 2 2 Raikkonen (2014); Button (2016)
Alberto Ascari 2 2 Farina, Hawthorn (1953)
Nico Rosberg 1 2 Schumacher (2010, 2011, 2012); Hamilton (2016)
Keke Rosberg 1 2 Fittipaldi (1980); Mansell (1985)
Juan Manuel Fangio 5 1 Farina (1951)
Sebastian Vettel 4 1 Raikkonen (2015, 2016)
Ayrton Senna 3 1 Prost (1988)
Jack Brabham 3 1 Hulme (1965, 1966)
Nelson Piquet 3 1 Mansell (1987)
Emerson Fittipaldi 2 1 Hulme (1973)
Graham Hill 2 1 Stewart (1965, 1966)
Jim Clark 2 1 Hill (1967)
Damon Hill 1 1 Villeneuve (1996)
Giuseppe Farina 1 1 Hawthorn (1953)
Jochen Rindt 1 1 Brabham (1968)
John Surtees 1 1 Rindt (1966)
Nigel Mansell 1 1 Piquet (1986)

I thought Prost had 5 originally including his pairing with Lauda, but Lauda nicked that WDC by half point didn't he?

So perhaps another WDC scalp to Lauda then?

Prost won the 1985 title with Lauda as his teammate. So it would be 5 for Prost.

I was going to try and look at "how many times has a driver beaten a past or future WDC in the same car" as opposed to how many past or future champions they've beaten.... But it's in DrZs posh above.

The winner in all of these is the FIRST driver. So D.Hill beat JV in 1996.

Hang on, what about if we discount races where the team mate retired due to un-reliability!
